How to stop interference on noise-cancelling headphones

I have a pair of Sennheiser Noiseguard headphones that I use for listening to music from my phone (iPhone 5) in the office. They're a few years old and have been generally fine, but just recently whenever I switch the on the noise cancelling I get really bad interference. Anyone have any ideas why this has started happening and how I can get it to stop? It's a real shame because when there's no interference I can really hear how good the Noiseguard is (especially when the bloke opposite is being so noisy like he is today

Does active mode use a battery ? could be that ?

yea could be depends which type it uses exactly which model are they ?

It's a single AAA battery - I've used a Duracell. Cheers btw.
