Hi there my setup is struggling to play 1080p files. The playback is awful. It keeps stopping for a few seconds and then starts again.

Can someone help me Troubleshoot?

This is what I have.

All drivers installed?

Which player are you using to watch? Sometimes for example I find media player stutters but VLC player is perfect.

I've been using VLC media player for everything but it still struggles. 720p is fine though. No issues there.

If you are trying to play videos online it could be down to your ISP? Run Memtest or windows built in one and check the memory and see if there is any faults.

it could be codec related, are you using the lav filters and is it setup to utilise the gpu?

Also how big are the 1080p files, bitrate ideally, but size and duration will do and what encoding is being used.

As a side note, my old x2 4200+ (which is actually slightly faster on the cpu side) couldn't manage all types of 1080p, it was fine with the older codecs and even h264 l3.1 but move it up to l4 and/or h265 and it would start to struggle

This is what I need to do. Can you advise how to use the lav filters and utilise the GPU?

Can't really advise on vlc as I don't actually use it.

I do however have mpc-hc installed as a backup but rarely if ever use it.
This uses lav filters so you can just follow this tutorial on setting it up to use gpu etc.

Having said that I normally use (yes I know I'm against the grain here) windows media player with shark007 codecs set to use lav filters where needed (win 10) pretty much 'recommended settings' with a few settings added to audio/subtitle settings and windows 10 MF splitter disabled (certain vids would only do audio). This works fine for me with everything I've thrown at it but obviously everyone is different.

Note: performance issues may arise on your cpu with some codec formats and file sizes like I mentioned earlier.

EDIT: you say from a box over network, what 'box' and how is it connecting because now you say that it could be buffering (I normally set mine to 60seconds if there's an option in the player). Are you streaming from a mapped/shared drive on another pc/nas or via a media server like plex? Could it be transcoding?
