Summons without being stopped?

I was driving on the A48 a week ago, it was a quiet Sunday and I put my foot down a bit. A guy came up fast behind me (he must have been doing 100+) and started tailgating, so I pushed it a little faster and this guy followed at similar speeds.

After a while I pulled into the left hand lane and slowed down to 70 to let him past. I figured the other guy was just someone else putting their foot down too. What freaked me out a bit is that he slowed down and matched my speed in the lane beside me - a couple of meters back. I checked my mirrors and he appeared to be messing near his center mirror on the ceiling of his car.

He then slowly edged in front me of, pulled in front, then indicated off at the next junction.

Is there any possibility this was an unmarked car (single male driver, can't remember the make!) If so, can I get a notice through the door in such circumstances, without being stopped at the time? I've heard of people getting them due to cameras, just never from an unmarked car without being pulled over.

If it was just some crazy guy with a dashcam, surely if he tried handing it to the police, he'd get done too?

I guess what I'm asking, is should I be worried for the next 6 months?

Whilst possible, I would have thought it highly unlikely.

I would be more worried about having just admitted doing 100mph on a public forum.

Not impossible, that's Dangerous Driving/Ban territory.

However, if you had just been VASCARed I would fully expect a stop on the roadside. Establish driver + continuity which is a pain after the fact (Despite the duty to name driver).

Regarding admitting it. My original post was a theoretical question, based upon a thought I had regarding speeding. My car would not even make the 100 mark :o

Your post clearly demonstrates that you were well over the limit and aware of it. I'd edit it if I were you.

As for the fine, if you don't hear anything within 14 days you're in the clear.

I can say for 99% certainty that it wasn't a cop though. If it was he'd have lit up like a Christmas tree and nailed you on the spot.

Didn't sound very theoretical before edit :p.

Regardless as jono says I guess it's possible but I doubt it would happen.

Besides at that sort of speed it's insta court/ban is it not? I'd have thought you'd have been pulled over if it was an undercover .

In my thought experiment ;), the way the car slowed down to match my speed, hanging back a bit (taking photos?) then going in front of me. It was weird behavior. It made me worry he was an off duty with a dash cam or something.

If he was off duty, he was still going crazily fast until he caught me, so surely he'd be incriminating himself?

Don't worry about it, if you were going anywhere near a tonne they would have pulled you over. It's just a crazy trying to scare you

whats with the paranoia about mentioning speeding? you actually think the police are going to start searching dvla records for a 'misterjingo'? lol

ignoring the speed - were you sitting in the right hand lane while the left lane was empty? if he roared up to up and sat there until you moved over, it could be some "vigilante" with a dashcam trying to get evidence of you lane-hogging... Just trying to think of options. As has been mentioned, anything to do with speed would incriminate them too and if it was an unmarked police car then I'd expect them to pull you over there and then, especially if they try suggesting it was dangerous driving, as the would surely be showing irresponsibility/undue-care if they noticed you being "dangerous" without stopping you, if that makes sense.

You'll be fine - he would have stopped you at the time. You also have nothing to fear for mentioning speeds on here - contrary to popular belief, the police can't prosecute you from a few lines of text on an Internet forum

Why would a police officer in an unmarked vehicle go through all that and then not stop you? Far easier than going back to the office and trawling through video footage.

Lol yea, some people....

If they could, half the internet would be in prison by now.

As has been said, I reckon it's more a vigilante dashcam owner or something like that.
The fact that you sped up and didn't get out the way is more of a douchebag move more than anything else though, if someone wants to go faster than me (and hypothetically I was doing over a ton), I'd much rather let them go past, no point in getting caught up in someone elses speeding habits and making an already dangerous driver more irate.

No one said they will :p

People have just pointed out that it probably isn't a very good idea to admit going 100mph on a public road on a public forum - which it isn't.
