Can they fail you for having no silencer boxes fitted?

I have had mine fail for 'excessive noise' as it is a straight through which cost a small fortune at a custom exhaust center.

Took the fail and went to my usual garage which passed the car (moved house so that was 50miles away)

Whats the rules or is it just down to tester?

The tester decides what is "excessively loud" and they are supposed to base their decision on how loud it is compared to a standard production model.

You need to meet the requirements of Regulation 54(2) of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulation 1986 as amended: ‘Every exhaust system and silencer shall be maintained in good and efficient working order and shall not be altered to increase the noise made by the escape of exhaust gases.

It's up to the tester to determine if they feel your car is "Excessively noisy". The best thing to do is either buy a cheap stock exhaust for the MOT or have a chat with the tester before you have the test and see what they think.

Or not be an annoying Boy Racer and fit a silencer in your exhaust... :D

Cheers! :D

Never thought of asking the guys before booking.

Its not that loud, hence why i thought it wouldnt be a problem! Just a grumble.

They also failed me for 'incorrect colour' headlights. Is thay normal?
Yes i fitted an HID kit, but have reflector headlights, so my 2nd garage just advised, rather than fail, on bulbs being 'discoloured'

I've never understood why people like to make their exhaust louder. My Corrado has a Milltek on it (the previous owner put it on and you can't get the originals now). It's not too loud but it's certainly louder than the stock exhaust. Despite it having a V6 and sounding "nice" I'd far rather it had something quieter on it.

Gives me the feeling of owning a V8?:o

Just strange as to why there are so many varients to the test....

Fart Cannon - Check.
HID's pointing in oncoming traffics eyes - Check.

Chav - Definitely.

What is a 'chav'?
My headlights were adjusted.
And with no cannon on the back, was a complete system, i dont see your point?

Yeah, adjusted - badly. Hence two of the reasons for failure on the MoT report.

And fart cannon doesn't need anything on the back - it's a term for any generally crap sounding exhaust with the soul aim of producing extra unwarranted noise.

Which can be a problem if you're driving an older vehicle and can only get aftermarket pipes for it. TBH, I think that's why people buy Harleys - They come loud and shouty as standard, so can't be failed!

Depends entirely on the exhaust note.
Mopeds sound like screaming flies. Race bikes sound like screaming hornets, Harleys sound like grumbling oxen, while some other Cruisers sound like an angry Balrog!!
Mine sounds like a spaceship..... Zoooooooooooooooom!!! :p

Badly? It was advised on the 2nd mot that it was adjusted, so whare do you get the 2 failures from?

So you know it sounds crap?

However nice it sounds to the owner it sounds crap to 99% of people it's driven past. A few might find it nice. Most won't. Most will have a little laugh inside themselves at the drivers expense and then be glad it's out of earshot.

Obviously everyone has a different opinion and I'm not here to disparage your car (which I've never heard) as it might be the exception to the rule. It's just a general opinion based on unsilenced cars that many of us hear. I'd find it embarrassing to drive something unsilenced but that's just me.

Yeah each to there own. Not particulary bothered about others opinions.
