Father in law wants to watch movies /videos etc from his phone onto his tv. He isn't very tech savvy (70's) and so am asking the best way for this to happen?

Phone is a sony xperia e4.
Tv is a Samsung smart tv work hdmi

Any thoughts?

Can you check if the TV has Miracast? If it does then he won't need to buy an adapter and can wirelessly mirror it to the TV.

And don't forget skyplayer (and probably other apps) disable hdmi output. Probably best to check what he wants to use first.

Quite unusual for a Samsung smart TV to not have miracast.

I can't seem to find anything about the E4 supporting MHL... The next best option would be getting a Chromecast.

What is model of the TV? As said above unusual for a Smart TV not to include Miracast especially if it's a well known brand. My LG TV might be newer than his, but I can miracast to it from my Xperia Z4 by going to Settings > Xperia™ Connectivity > Screen mirroring.

Could be the e4 doesn't support it rather than the TV, or vice versa.

could try a microUSB to HDMI cable (managed to pick one up in a pound shop a few weeks back myself, only to find that samsung phones needed MHL :P), so that might be a first port of call

Bought the Chromecast - £22.99

Didn't want to spend anywhere near that, but if it is the best thing for the job and easy for a 70 a year old to use then so be it!
