Sunday Trading Laws

I am so relieved that it hasn't passed and was rejected.

How many people here have ever worked in retail? How many know what the Job involves and how hard of a job it is

What is so hard that means it is deserving of being a special case? Plenty of people have anti social working hours, retail is not (should not be) a special case.

With a comment like that I can tell you have never worked in retail, try it for a week then you will know what it's like. I'm.not asking for it to be a special case all I want is it to be fair

A shame, would have liked having the option of shopping before 10am on a Sunday. Sainsbury where I am open their doors at about 9:30 but no staff on tills until 10. Would prefer to have my shopping done by 9am tbh.

Well restricted hours makes it a special case compared to everything else that is free to operate at whatever hours. Fair would be unrestricted hours like every other industry.

And as you so astutely guessed, I haven't, that would be why I asked you the question,as you clearly have a strong opinion on it.

People in retail sometimes have to work 12-14 hours a day esepcially if its a smaller store and someone has called in sick. Some week you might not get a day off until 6-7 straight working days. Holidays are a joke as you can only take between a certain time meaning December - Jan are no holiday months and between June and July now you tell me what other industry does that??

No only are we customer service people but we have to be marketing, admin, councillors, PA's (to managers), cleaners all on top of trying to hit sales targets, store card targets UPT targets, ATV targets and with a measly hourly rate of around £7 - £7.50 an hour!!

I worked in retail for 7 years. It isn't exactly difficult and frankly I ended up working pretty much all day Sunday anyway, by the time you have 'browsing' and 'shopping up' time and you get in before it opens and stay after to sort stuff out etc etc you are basically working a full day anyway.

Retail isn't and shouldn't be a 'special case' - you still get 2 full days off a week unless you personally decide otherwise anyway!

I don't mean to offend you but it isn't a difficult job and the rates of pay reflect that. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in retail but I was under no illusions it was some sort of gruelling task for which I was horribly underpaid (I use to earn 2p more than minimum wage). Of course its difficult sometimes and some of the tasks could be frustrating etc but what job doesn't have that? Sometimes I had to do a 12 hour day but then I got paid for 12 hours as a result which was always a happy occurrence. My personal favourite was working boxing day :D

What rubbish, smaller shops aren't subjected to Sunday trading laws, and welcome to the real world, guess what lots of jobs are similar.

If people don't want to shop or work on Sundays they don't have to. Why, though, would they want to stop anyone else, who wants to, doing so ?

The problem is in retail you don't have a choice of working on a Sunday or not (it used to be that case but no any more)

Because of the contracts now you are now expected to work 5 out of ANY 7 days so that can include weekends and it could be every weekend till you decide to move on. Those days are long gone where you could choose what days you wanted to work

None of that sounds particularly large retail specific, plenty of jobs will be long hours, a 9 to 5 is rarely that for anyone who isn't just a secretary, loads of jobs will have irregular days off, holiday restrictions are commonplace in plenty of industries too.

None of that screams "we're so hard done by we deserve a special law to say we can't be asked to work too long on an arbitrary day"

every industry....

try production where certain levels of staff must be maintained but not only that staff with certain skills.

The reason its such a popular job with students is because its quick money, and can work around your studying hours

wait now its flexible and can fit around studying?

what just happened to 12-14 hour shifts 6-7 straight working days?

retail isn't special nor is it particularly hard compared to nay profession or other industry, Christ imagine working on a production line where you have to hold your hand up if you want to go for a wizz so someone can switch in with you.

imagine how a supervisor with a dislike of you could **** with you there....

With the reference of 12-14 hours a day i was referring to those who work full time (40 hours) Students tend to be part time so it really has little or no effect on them

What I don't get is why you lot are so upset about the Trading Hours for Retailers?

Is it because you want to go shopping at 8pm Sunday night (why would you)?

Is it because life is not fair that your job requires you to work past 6pm on a Sunday so retail workers must also (new job?)?
