New Cars MOT extended to 4 years?

Extend it to 5 years and increase the fine to driving like a muppet with bald tyres to £1000.

I saw a 61 plate 3 series this morning with sparks flying off both rear tyres , they were down to the damn cords... I tried to tell him but he proceded to overtake a few HGVs like a muppet

Unless anything shows up on ANPR it's unlikely you will get stopped. The Police don't have the man power to walk the streets anymore and even PCSO's are being cut back.

A lot of people I know just give the car to the garage and have it serviced and MOT'd and anything it fails for is fixed there and then. People are just so unconnected with driving these days it's frightening tbh.

I like the idea, purely because I've just bought a new car. Tbh I think I'll know when the tyres are getting bald, when I start taking roundabouts sideways more than usual :D

As a night trunker trucker my eyes can vouch for the amount of vehicles who's headlights are out of focus.

People just don't care. I personally had to hand in a defect report for the nearside headlight way too high on a 65 plate Scania. I was running full down on the "in cab adjustment" but the N/s was still dazzling.

"Oh the day driver doesn't use the headlamps so he doesn’t care" ! was the reply I got !

"Well I've put a defect in so his vehicle is V.O.R (Vehicle Off Road) until it's repaired. He'll have to drive Dribble-Arses truck until his comes back"

(YES, that is the perfect description. Already had to have the seat replaced once at £1k cost)

"He won't be happy about that" !!

"Shoulda got it fixed then, he finishes early enough in the day" (14:00)

Sorry for the Rant but it really gets my goat !

Thing is though most people take their car the dealer for services while still under warranty. So most of the "MOT" stuff gets picked up anyway.

But there will always be one idiot who is advised by the dealer to change tyres, brakes, or other worn out stuff and will ignore it. Then end up killing someone. Especially when you have cars like Peugeot, which are already falling apart by the 3 year mark.

Why not? You can get fined for bald tyres currently..?

You can yes, but we don't have the plod walking around kicking and checking the tyres do we? So what's the point? It's like the middle lane fine, the only way a fine is going to be dealt out is if a police car is in the right place at the right time or maybe if dashcam evidence was handed in.

MOT costs me about £35 a year, costs more than that just to fill up with fuel - not really fussed if they change it tbh, it's fairly insignificant in the costs of having a car.

I'm against it for safety reasons. But I'm assuming it's realted to the increases in VED for 2017. By sweetening the deal motorists won't notice so much that they are about to be fleeced:

https://www.carwow.co.uk/news/ved-road-tax-from-2017-0182-2060

Only applies to cars registered going forward - But it would be cheaper for my car to be taxed under the new system :( Costs £145/year currently but I bet they'll still keep increasing it.

IMHO we should have a "light" MOT for the first 3 years and a regular MOT after that.
Something like £10 for the first 3 years where they would check, brakes, tyres and basic things. (could even be part of the cars warranty)
Also would be great to have the mileage records since the first year.

Is this going to be decided on Wednesday? Looking at getting a brand new car next year so would be good to know where I stand in relation to MOT's.

Seriously, this will affect you by all of 35 quid so it's almost not even worth thinking abiut let alone factoring into something you may buy next year!!

Would be handy to know though :)

If HGVs were allowed to do 70 mph, they'd be less morons in the middle lane.
It's ironic that someone calling what is admittedly a large number of people stupid cannot correctly apply basic spelling and grammar.

I would be wary of an increase in the period of time that vehicles would not be tested under MOT for reasons previously mentioned.

People should be fined for presenting a car at MOT with bald tyres, might actually make people check them if they got landed with 6 points and a fine at MOT time.

If only there was a place local which currently had a first MOT at 4 years system in place already, which could provide some actual data on how/if this change would affect vehicle safety.

It would need to be under warranty as no garage should be expected to spend time peeing about for £10 jobs. By the time someone is booked in turns up late/doesn't turn up etc.. A regular mot around where I live is available for £25. Its not something that should be changed. People are terrible at looking after their cars.
