Took my car in for an MOT and they have told me the 3D effect plates are no longer legal. Is this actually true? Because I think they are wrong.

As far as I know it's the actual 3D ones (as in ones that aren't flat) that aren't legal?

3D is fine, it's stupid fonts that are the problem, and people mucking about with the spacing and sticking in an extra 4 bolts so they can make their number plate spell MELONS or some such.

Generally people cite this as being directly from the DVLA website:
"Characters on a number plate can be 3D, providing they meet all the other requirements, but honeycomb or other background patterns are not allowed".

However, the most recent regs now omit such mention.
Often, it's down to a carbon-fibre effect or similar nitpick that fails to meet the specs.

Yea but they actually said they would fail if it were to be tested with them on :/

I guess I'll just take it somewhere else and ask them.

EDIT: Ok this is a weird one. They ARE legal, but apparently new MOT rules say they are a fail. But I'm unable to find any evidence of that O_o

Couldnt find any myself. But the garage (a Ford one who are currently servicing the car) is convinced. Thing is they have had the car before and not said anything, so if it's changed it's very recently.

Three-Dimensional characters are permitted to use grey edging in order to achieve the 3D effect on any age of vehicle

Taken straight from the MOT manual on the .gov website.

I think there is a difference and confusion with the 3D part of it. Are they saying that the 3D ones (embossed type) will fail or the 3D effect ones(flat printed with grey edges) ones?

They are flat 3d effect ones. They looked at them and said they would be a fail because of the lettering. Wouldn't budge on it.

Go to a council bus depot or council vehicle mot station. I am pretty sure you can just drive in and get sorted. Just get it sorted there and get clarification. Then go and get your money back.

Then go and get your money back.

Luckily I haven't paid anything for the MOT. It was in for a service and 1st MOT. I have until the end of the month to get the MOT done, so I just told them to skip it :D

UPDATE: Well...

Called in to another garage on the way home from work. They said the plates are fine. So now it's booked in with them for the MOT instead :)
