MSI R9 390 - High Temps

Been playing a fair bit of The Division today and noticed on my MSI afterburner app that the Graphics card is hitting 89-90c during load on 1080p. I'm a bit concerned as I think that this is a little bit too high, do I have to RMA the card?

I'm using a NZXT H440 case with good cable management and I think fairly good airflow however below the GFX card I do have an old xfi sound card, would removing this card make any difference (and is it even still needed?)

It was purchased when the cards were released.

Any help would be appreciated.

Fair few people have said MSI apply crap loads of TIM on the chip, maybe worth taking it apart and reapplying a normal amount.

It's not too hard and there are plenty of videos on YouTube showing how they do it, i'd recommend and good screw driver kit though as some screws are quite small.

There was a shed-load of TIM on my 980Ti when I replaced mine and it dropped the temps by a good 10C. From what I remember, it's 4 screws and disconnect the fan, then carefully lift the shroud/fans off.

It's a naturally hot card. I had one which would hit 94c and start throttling. Replacing the paste helped a lit, but ultimately my lack of airflow was the main issue and I swapped for the Gigabyte G1 970 which was £200 in the ocuk clearance.

I've got an msi 390x and h440 new edition. With three fans intaking on the front it would normally max out at 85. Have recently removed the cooler to fit a gpu block and it's very easy. Thermal paste had been applied with a shovel so I'm pretty sure some well applied good paste would have reduced the temps a decent amount.

yep take a look at this, This was my card and it made a 23c difference in tomb raider (worst case game) massive difference and still going strong today.

There is no force involved it taking the heat sink off so if you find your self applying any force your doing it wrong. You would have to be very clumsy to break your card to be honest its a very easy task. If you can build an Ikea bed side table you can replace the tim on your card :D

I replaced my tim on mine also. Covered and temps was getting high. Easy to take apart tim now replaced. a lot cooler wooo

Did some tinkering last night and after running the division for 30mins, temp hit 95c! however according to Afterburner the fans never span up past 28%.

Had to fiddle with a few settings as I don't think it was set to auto (I think i'd locked it to a specific speed even though it was ticked to auto) and when I ran futuremark, the fans span up to the correct speeds specified in the fan curve. This time in futuremark it hit 75c so I think the issue is mostly fixed. I'll post back once I get running The Division again on my Desktop.

I think i'll look into potentially re-pasting the GPU based on some of the replies in here. Thanks guys :)
