980Ti SLI - silly to do it now?

Afternoon chaps

For some reason, mainly boredom, I'm contemplating throwing a second 980Ti into my system. Very basic question, would this be really daft to do this now, with the new cards on the horizon?

The pascal thread is just full of guesswork, I get that, but the current 'feel' seems to be that any sort of worthy successor to the 980Ti won't be out until 2017. Is that right?

Rest of system basics are:

X99, 5930k OC'd to 4.4
1 x 980Ti (hybrid watercooled)
2560 x 1440 Rog Swift (original).

I've got thoughts of maybe moving up to the Asus 34" superwide, hence the extra 980Ti ponderings.

And I've discovered that I think I actually like messing around with SLI, trying to get games to work properly. I used 780Ti in SLI and 670's in SLI prior to my single 980Ti card setup. Games running really well with no issues and smooth as silk gets really boring! I think I'm some sort of gaming masochist :D

Yeah, I was initially massively impressed with the power and sheer grunt of my one 980Ti when I first got it just before Christmas. This was with all my previous games. But then I got Fallout 4, and the Division just the other day and I'm surprised at how taxing both these games are when you crank up the settings.

I don't like dipping below 60fps, even with gsync on my swift, and there seems little point to have high HZ monitors and barely break past 60fps (which Fallout 4 and the Division hardly do).
I like to game with all the bells and whistles on, and like to add reshade, sweetfx, enb etc etc to games whenever possible. I like to tweak!

But, I see the same old SLI issues raising their head. I can't find any concrete info but from a spot of googling it sounds like the Division has terrible SLI issues and no performance gain at the mo, and I'm not sure about Fallout 4. Anyone shed any details on FO4 and SLI?

I've just ruled it out, Wunkley.

Support for SLI is diminishing, and with DX12 reliant on developers providing the support it'll only get worse. I fear a second card will be nothing but another heat source.

I'm waiting for Pascal Titan.

I'm not sure one is needed at 1440p. But if it's good value and you can afford it now, then why not?

One is the current sweetspot for many games right now at 1440p.

I don't think any 980Tis are 'good value' really, they are pricey tbh ;) I'd be looking at getting the Gigabyte waterforce as well for £600 I reckon. to go alongside my current DIY hybrid watercooled card.

Have you string? Bah :)

You're probably right, but It's my birthday later this week and I feel a bit reckless...

I'm thinking of doing the same. One TX just isnt cutting it @3440x1440 so I may take the hit and sell it to buy two Ti's. I know its hardly being frugal but it is what it is

The way I look at upgrades as long as each time I upgrade I see/feel a significant difference in performance/visual quality then its worth it. ATI 4870 - ATI 6970 - 780 sc - 980ti - 980ti sli.. This path as shown a significant increase with the addition of extra resolution added into the mix along the way.

I run 980TI SLI @ 4k and its more than worth it as I get to run @ 60fps with very little reduction in graphical settings. You will have no problems at 1440p with SLI in most cases.

That said, I could manage a single 980Ti @ 1440p

Dont want two ref cards bud. I fitted the EVGA AIO to mine but the cooler/pump is on its way out so I will RMA it and sell mine. I have my eye on two MSI gaming editions as I had the same model in 780 sli and really liked them

Hey John, I found the MSI coolers to be great (mainly a v good noise output in comparison to say the G1's) but really needed a side-fan on in my case in order for them not to throttle.

Ideally get a pair of Hybrid cards, or at least 1 for the above like I've done...

TBH bud I found two gaming editions to work fine without a side fan as the fans were so quiet anyways. Hybrid is the way to go but then it would have to be ti SLI as the TX hybrid is so expsnsive
