Benefit claiming Mother of 8 cant pay the rent?

You shouldn't have 8 kids if you can't support them. Using welfare as a permanent means to support them is the problem here.

It's true that some people bring kids into the world without the necessary means to adequately support them and so rely on welfare. However the kids must come first so it's a catch 22. How would you legislate birth control? You can't.

Turn them all out into the cold so they grow up hating their mother for getting them into that mess.

Tax avoidance isn't something widespread amongst the general population it's much more prevalent in corporations like Starbucks, Amazon, Google etc. It beggars belief that our government seems so apathetic at tackling big business tax avoidance but keen on picking on the average Joe.

Tax avoidance and indeed evasion is rife amongst the general population. Payment cash in hand, not declaring certain income, paying much higher pension contributions to avoid higher taxation bands, the list goes on

Pay part of the benefit provided straight to the council for the property rent, you'll always need a roof over your head and this will stop the problems with rent arrears.

Agreed, I don't see why the tenant ever needs to see a penny of the rent?!

Pay some of it straight to the gas/electric/water boards as a direct debit, make it that you can't run out of gas or end up on costly prepayment meters.

This on the other hand I don't agree with. What's to stop them leaving the heating on full blast all the time, all the lights on, TV on 24/7 etc. when they don't have to pay the bill?

I think it's shocking that people can be allowed to get into a situation like this, but I'm not sure what a realistic solution would be without punishing the children?

Looks like she has it made now then....

"Recently, it emerged she is set to cash in on a new TV career after her agent Barry Tomes revealed he is in talks with ITV about filming her setting up a mechanic's business.
Mr Tomes, who also represents Benefits Street's White Dee, is now in charge of looking after Buchan's public image.
He said: 'Marie is a grafter. Her ambition is to be a mechanic and she is at college doing a motor mechanics course"

Well he is doing a grand job so far, cos there ain't many people who would put her forward as "a grafter" :p

Also "30 second court case" ....

I can't say I envy her.

No money, 8 kids, struggles to find time for work, little possibility of finding a stable partner willing to put up with it all. She has little chance of improving her own situation until the children are much older. Sure, she got herself in to this mess, but focusing on that does nothing to fix the problem at hand.

TBH I'm amazed £25k is enough for 8 people to live off. After tax, me and the missus take home about that and we're wondering how we're going to cope with one kid (when the time comes).

She doesn't pay rent it seems so that is quite a saver. I don't know why people bother with this articles it's pure click bait to stir up the foamers who hate benefits.

9 people. And it's not.

Less than £1500 a month after rent costs is what she's expected to live on. Factor in some heat & light, water, a telephone line, and a TV license, and you're left with about £30 per person per week. That's only just enough for food.

Got to feel for the kids, to be honest.

I imagine heating and water bills would be crippling. It would probably make sense to set her up with solar panels, ground heating, and a small turbine so she can be as near self-sufficient as possible in that respect.

How is she going to start up a mechanics business if she currently hasn't got the time to work?

One of those damned if you do/don't situations though. It's not as if it would be a great solution taking 8 kids into care.

I can't say but when you consider the billions collectively of tax avoiding corporations to those ordinary folk who try and cheat the system it's clear that our government has failed to tackle the problem.

both private and corporate..

I know self employed people who put through anything to reduce their taxable income.. I some cases, some are earning in the excess of £25k without paying any tax. Whilst it might not be on the same scale as corporates, it's still tax avoidance and unfair to those that pay their taxes through the PAYE system.

A builder I had round last year, wanted 40-50% cash for an extension to pay people who are under the tax radar and pocket some tax free cash.

I dunno, buying/cooking in bulk for that many people will give some decent savings. They're not going to be eating fancy meals, but they're not going to go hungry (assuming she can actually cook!)

Heating a house with 9 people in will cost the same as heating the same house with 3 people in (in fact probably a bit less due to the generated body heat).

Water will be significantly higher if she's on a meter, if not then it will be the same as for a single person.

All she needs is a load of exercise bikes rigged up to generators, get the kids taking turns on them :p

I can fully sympathise with the fact she hasn't got time to work, although she can't really play the victim in that respect since she did make the decision(s) to get into that situation in the first place.

plenty more of this to come when the govt finally brings in universal credit and every council house tenant has the housing benefit paid to them and it becomes their responsibility to manage their own finances

at the moment councils get the housing benefit direct, under the new scheme it goes to the tenant.
