i need glasses and some advice

i'm happy with my eye sight at the moment and don't want to make it seem bad in comparison.

You're happy because your eyes deteriorate slowly and so you don't notice the gradual decline. This is why when you start wearing them you'll notice it wasn't as good as you thought it was as others have said

if i don't get glasses soon, or do get them but rarely wear them, is there potential my sight could get worse because of not wearing them?

Your eyes will fluctuate in their performance over time regardless of whether you wear them or not. Generally age brings on long sightedness. If your eyes were generally fine then you this normally manifests itself into needing reading glasses and if you're short sighted then it ends up needing bifocals or a combination of glasses for different activities. As a child I'd always hoped that age would correct my short sightedness but it doesn't work that way.

Get them and enjoy better vision. :)

I've needed glasses since I was about 6months old (i'm 24 now)
You learn to live with them in time. I'm still slightly annoyed by them even 24 years later. Just the little things like, smudge or stuff just appearing from no where even though you are 100% sure you never touched the glass....sigh

Right now, I'm pretty close to technically blind as a bat, my prescription is horrible.
I however dont see the issue, everything has a slight blur without my glasses on and I can only last for about an hour before my eyes are sore.
Sure my eyes are bad, but not as much as they are saying!

There are plenty of different designs available, you should be able to find something you like.
Another option is contacts. I've tried contacts, but cant deal with putting my finger close to my eye, totally freaks me out.
Will eventually get lazer eye surgey, once long term effects are studyed and the procedure is safe.

I'm short sighted and I've worn glasses since I was in the 6th form at school. Like the OP, I was advised to use them for driving, TV, cinema, etc. At the time though, the biggest difference they made was to reading blackboards at school.

An optician once said that my eyes would probably deteriorate in terms of the short sightedness until I got to about 30 and he was scarily correct! My prescription has changed little since then.

I don't wear them all the time, but I'll always wear them in the car - it just feels wrong if I've not got them on.

It's scary that people with short-sighted vision are only 'advised' to wear them for driving.

Should be compulsory really!

It has been for quite a while:

^ All of this

Been wearing mine for 25 years now but only when driving.
Blackboards were the bane of my life at school so I sat at the front until I got glasses and could join in with the cool kids at the back again.

No not wearing glasses won't make your eyesight worse but it will continue to deteriorate regardless. Also you're likely to get headaches due to eye strain and generally make life more difficult.

As people say wear them if you need them and yes your eyesight will be noticeably better. If you're driving and you've been told you need them, don't drive without them. Lastly don't worry about it its not major surgery and its all quite painless!

I have cheap £1 glasses everywhere in all different sizes.
These are the ones by my PC.
Of course this isn't your problem OP.

Aren't they reading glasses though? OP is short sighted so needs distance lenses which you can't really buy cheap.

Same sort of thing for me - worn since young and gradually got worse then levelled out from mid 20s and now improving again.

This for me aswell, last test I had optician said this improvement should have happened in your late teens (I'm 28 now)

My Brother never needed glasses until 2 years ago, he only needs them for the PC and watching TV but he said he was surprised on how much of an improvement it made to his vision when he didn't think he had any issues.

If you've been told you need some please get them.

I just bought a new pair and also prescription sunglasses after 5 years...yeah...should really go every 2 years but luckily my prescription remained identicle but I do need new glasses because I stepped on mine out of the shower and scratched my spare pair.

In terms of taking care of them I never use tissues (lint) but still manages micro scratches all over after a while, dirt from shirt or your cloth. Sometimes I'll just use soapy water then blow off the water from my mouth.

Opticians charges a fortune, online can save you lots of money but you will need the distances between your pupils and work out how the glasses sit on your nose to get the optimism focus section of the lens in the right place so I've always go to opticians, just haggle, I managed to haggle £150 off the 2 pairs. No doubt they still made a killing but eyes are important.

There are reasons other than just prescription to get your eyes checked more regularly. Heart disease, lung disease and even brain problems can all be spotted in a regular check-up. Not to mention getting your pressures checked.

I know all that. (you forgot diabetes)

And I know work pays for them too, there is no reasons for me not to...I just neglected them for a while, despite what i said about eyes being important, and in before someone says...you are a photographer!

It's not all like this:

:D :D

lol that sketch is comedy gold :D

I started wearing glasses again last year wore them for a time as a kid oh how i did not like that lol. wearing them now for reading was really struggling with small print, even looking at smart phone text is clearer with specs on.

just age related optician said in my case. had a full eye test no other issues detected.

Before I got glasses (Around 7 years ago, also short sighted) I never realised just how bad my eye sight was, until I picked up my glasses and wore them for the first time. It was like ultra HD vision! Now I can't go with out. I would be a danger to myself and other people, especially when driving.

I'd say it's definitely worth going for OP!

ok i'll give them a shot. any suggestions where to go? i got my prescription from specsavers but wasn't pleased with the prices. I can afford a good pair, i just don't want to pay stupid money for what i'm sure doesn't need to be that price. my sun glasses cost £7 and i wear them all summer for the last 2 years and they are still great. i see identical pairs for £300+ (though the rayban badge is real on theirs) and just don't understand.

i should clarify it wasn't advised i need them for driving, just that driving and cinema are the 2 places she suggested wearing glasses, though it wasn't at all a requirement.

i don't get headaches, strain or ever notice i can't read anything.

just looking at my receipt from last year product was 52 quid and the dispensing was £107, this was at boots seems a bit of a racket to me those specs are no different to a pair of sunglasses i bought from next for £10

seen people mention Glasses Direct on here before not used a online service myself yet.

Yes you will realise how poor your eyesight is without glasses.

I was pretty much in the same boat as you, needed glasses for driving and things like the cinema, going onto the football etc. I never wore glasses for regular living and it never really bothered me day to day, up until recently when I thought enough is enough and had laser surgery.

I don't know whether not wearing glasses can make your eyes worse, I doubt it though, my prescription remained the same for a good 15 years and I rarely wore them.

How was your laser surgery? I'm only -0.5 and -0.75 but I kinda want to bite the bullet asap and get it over and done with - hate glasses and never wear em.

As for your eyes - they should stop changing shape in your mid to late 20s. Short sighted/long sightedness is entirely dictated by the shape of your eyeball in most cases.

Yes, they would make you realise how your eyes should be.

There's nothing wrong with wearing glasses and your eyesight is more likely to get gradually worse.

I've worn glasses since I was a teenager and first needed them to read the blackboard in class.

In the last 5 years my sight has actually got slightly better as the eyes gradually correct. I think that's rare though.

Not rare. What is happening is when you age, your lens cannot flex as efficiently. With low short-sighted prescriptions, it can improve your eyesight enough to even remove the glasses altogether (essentially correcting the refraction error caused by your eyeball being slightly too big). With normal 20/20 people, it requires them to wear reading glasses.
