I'd like a golf gti dsg, but I'm concerned about the gear box longevity.
I'm going to spend 9-10k, and this will buy 2007/2008 gti.
Any one own a car with dsg?
I read extended warranty would be a waste of money.

My friend has an '06 R32 DSG, he gives it some stick too and it has been fine. Just make sure you stick to the service routine to minimize the chances of a problem.

Mate of mine had the extended warranty on an Ibiza Cupra of his with the 7spd DSG and from the bills he showed me, it very much wasn't a waste of time and worth the money.

That was with SEAT though, not sure if you can get a VW extended warranty that works the same but I assume so. It paid for itself many times over.

Cant speak for the GTi specifically but I understand most of the DSG boxes are the same. My boss had 2 cars with DSG boxes - a TTS and his wife's A3 2.0 TDI. The gearbox in the TT died and Audi replaced the box, costing about £4000 (it was a company car)

The gearbox in the A3 died too - would not go past second gear. It was older than the TT and relatively high mileage so wasnt worth him fixing, so he ended up selling to one of my friends who runs a garage and could fix it himeself - as his girlfriend was looking for an A3 anyway. The car was worth about 4k working - they bought it for about a grand and after buying the parts needed to fix it, it owes them another 2 - without labour. If you were paying labour it would have been an uneconomical repair

I'm sure there are thousands of reliable DSG boxes but I'd personally not buy one having seen the bills they can throw up

Which year ? Mk5, mk6 ?

The Wet 6 speed and Dry 7 speed (which i guess he has?) are two totally different boxes, the dry is not related to the OP.

I have the Wet 6 speed in an R36, this car will put the box under more stress than most stuff VW offer, to date the box has been perfect for the last 93k.

Most of the time it will be the mechatronic unit which fails, and will be around 1.5k to sort out, so hardly any different from a manual clutch and dual mass change.

Any reason you want the DSG? Since these cars are getting on now I'd opt for a manual for longevity.

So I could get MK5 for 9k and keep £1.5k aside for repairs

I really wouldn't spend 9-10k on an 8-9 year old Mk5 GTI.

Can't you get a half decent mk5 gti for ~6k these days?

10k will surely get you in to an 09 Mk6.

Because the DSG is a nicer drive and has an auto option?

I completely agree, I've specced DSG in the past 4 cars I've had because of this. However buying 2nd hand I wanted to question the OPs reasoning since a manual would be a safer bet. Since he can only drive a auto the point is moot anyway.

I have a Leon Fr which shares the same engine and DSG box as the GTi. The gearbox has covered 110k miles so far without issue *touch wood*.

The engine and gearbox combo is lovely :D

These are fine as long as they're looked after, I didn't have problems with any of mine (I've owned a mk5&6 dsg and now an stronic a3: you might want to consider these also)

The service schedule states the boxes are due an oil and filter change every 40k.

Warranty isn't a waste no, you just need to ensure the car you buy is under 100k and has full service history in line with VW's recommended service intervals - fully comp. For audi the ''cheap warranty'' threshold is 60k.

VW only offer driveline warranty for anything over 100k

These new sealed auto gearboxes are nothing but trouble. Of course they're going to heat up and the oil is going to burn? Why not make them serviceable? I'm sure people would prefer to spend more to replace the oil every year than wear the box out completely.

Ridiculous.

DSG has oil replacements every 40k?

Work colleague had a leon fr tdi. No history of the box being serviced, couldn't select reverse all the time so changed the oil. Saw metal shavings in the oil. So it is important they are serviced.
