Basically, he currently drives an E39 528i and fancies a change. He's looking at something similar in terms of being a wafty effortless car, while being comfortable, but not lacking in power either (similar to the 528, or more powerful is his preference)

Budget is around £10k, he wants an automatic, and petrol engined. I've already suggested he look at the Jag XF 3.0 V6 and he does like the look of it, just need to get him to drive one now!

Any other options? Was looking at a few different models, such as the Merc CLS, Audi A6 and the previously mentioned Jag XF

A previously written off E60 M5, what could possibly go wrong? :p

The XF with the 3.0 V6 sounds a good choice to me - it's a very solid engine, economical for what it is, and perfectly adequate performance wise: I had the same engine in my XJ6 and it was exactly as quick as an E39 530i at both rolling and standing starts. He could also look at X350 XJs - they're cheaper and more barge like, albeit less modern inside.

In which way are either of these cars wafty and effortless? One is a small saloon the other has a 9000rpm V10 with a harsh SMG box! The S4 will feel no nicer inside than his E39, they are both cars from circa 2000 really...

He wants something 'similar in power' to a 528i - they are 190bhp. There is absolutely no need to buy into the world of bottom of the market tatty 500bhp megasaloons.

Honestly, this forum at times :D

V6 XF or a Mercedes E280/320 sound ideal.

Actually he said "or more powerful is his preference" :D

S4 is clearly not a 500bhp mega saloon, and £10k is hardly a bottom of the market tatty example. I'll give you the fact it's probably not as big and wafty as it could be, but the OP asked for

I'd assume Fox was saying the S4 is a small saloon, and the M5 is the 500bhp bottom of the market example. While he has said he'd love an M5, he's also well aware he would have to double his budget to get a halfway decent one

Same issue as the S4, its a small saloon and a step down in 'waftyness' than the 5 series he has currently

Also for consideration:

£9,250 Honda Legend 3.5 i VTEC V6 EX 4dr

I doubt he'd go for a Honda after the last 10 years owning a 5 Series (and a brief period with a Jaguar XJS, that was lovely! :D)

Most Audis are pretty hard rides if your looking for luxury. You need to pick specific specs to get one with a soft ride and it won't be a performance one. Where as all the Lexus models are pretty smooth, especially the old ones.

Used Lexuses are better value as well I think. You get a lot more for your money. Plus they don't break.

BTW use this site to check the MOT history of a car before seeing it: https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status
I find theres usually a reason some cars a listed cheaper, usually recent fails or expensive advisories. Or if theres no MOT history (where there should be one) it's even more worrying :P
