Hello everyone,
I've decided on a budget of 3k to get a decent car that could potentially outperform "most" cars on the twisties, but still have a nice bit of power at 70mph+, so when I put my foot down I can feel like the car is actually responding.
I've been driving for 9 years now, but I've only even owned a 1.1 106, 1.2 206 and briefly a 2l golf that was past its sell by date (£600).
I want to get my hands dirty and fit mods myself to whatever i buy such as cool air induction kits, cosmetic improvements and maybe brakes upgrades, so that ideally needs to be in cooperated into the budget. I'm new to all this so I wouldn't expect any mods to increase the value of the car, but I want to learn.
Ideally the car will have 5 doors, be modifiable, and any replacement parts not too expensive should anything go wrong in the future.
I am not keen on MX5 coupe style cars, and whilst I love the look of the MR2 and I think it fits most of the bill, I think its too much car too soon for a driver who will be new to thrashing a car around.
I'm thinking my best bet might be to buy an old car for around 1k, put aside 1k for mods, and keep 1k for any repairs that may be immediately needed. Or would it be better to get the best car i can for the full 3k and forget mods for now?
Really I'm looking for the best bang for my buck, but with the chance to mod the car myself right away as that what excites me about the idea most. I am open to all brands, but not a fan of coupes.
MPG and fuel costs is not really a concern as I want to use it for fun, but if reliability issues are known for the kind of old car I'd be looking at I'd like to try avoid it before the repair bill.
I realize for the low budget and wanting to fit mods i'm gonna most likely be looking at quite an old car with high mileage, but I am very welcome to any suggestions or tips you guys might have if you can see where I am coming from.
Highly appreciate any advice! Thank you!
