Greed on the bay

You just get dozens of listings at near retail for products which simply do not sell. They are there for week after week. It's most bizarre.

Got an example? It costs to list something so they're losing money on it.

If they actually want to sell then the price will have to come down to where it will sell.

If it is selling for near retail then clearly its in demand and clearly people are willing to pay those prices.

of course I don't have an example, we are posting in a random thread full of anecdotes. It's just something that comes up time and again that I've noticed, thats all.

'This item has been relisted'
'This item has been relisted'

over and over again.

If they actually want to sell then the price will have to come down to where it will sell.

This seems lost on them.

Everyone seems to be missing the point. I've seen similar things, it's annoying and isn't supply and demand because the people in question never seem to sell anything. I think it stems from the stupid ebay fees. For example in the OP's case, he thinks £350 is too much for a used 980, which is probably right, but in the sellers eyes, he is barely going to clear £300 after fees (and possibly delivery if included in the price), which in the sellers eyes is too low.

The most bizarre behaviour on ebay though, by far, is people spending loads more on an auction than on an identical buy it now listing.

I was selling something, and someone else was selling the exact same thing and there was no discernible difference in the listing, feedback etc. Yet people were bidding on it for 7 days and the winner spent nearly £10 more than what i had mine listed as (and It was a "or best offer" listing as well). So instead of buying mine on day one for £10 less, or more as I would have taken a decent offer people spent 7 days bidding on the other item only to spend a decent amount more.

The gfx cards the OP is talking about do sell though. I have seen second hand cards sell for more than new in the past.

I do know what you mean though, there are lots of things on ebay that are priced way above what they should be that never sell. They don't seem to realise when you search for a product you get a page full of them and can list by price.

Around the last 10 items I've bought stuff they've been from Gumtree.
Usually a bargain and I can go to their house to see it/them working.

A mate of mine does very well buying items that are on offer from OC/UK and its competitors and then selling them on at a slight profit plus p&p on the bay, tbh he makes more on the p&p than most of the items he sells, he noticed ages back lots of listings that were more or less retail and decided to try for himself, he makes a very nice sideline by doing it, the stupidity of some ebay punters amazes us both!

He makes a profit, even after the paypal and ebay fees?

More money than sense springs to mind with some of the buyers.

If what you say is true can you point me to him on the bay?

Indeed he does, takes advantage of things like the "this week only" offers here and then lists a bit under regular retail, after his fees he still makes as I say mainly on p&p, he soley relies on the stupidity of buyers and does well from it.

Why? Are you daft enough to buy at his prices?!?

I doubt he'd appreciate my outing him via this thread, ultimately though he's doing nothing wrong, nobody's got a gun to the buyers heads.

Couldn't agree more.

Two things,

You can see completed listings on ebay to get a ballpark figure on the item you are after.

If the resale value is very good, that just means buying a new one and selling within a reasonable time is likely to recoup a very good proportion of your initial outlay, how is that bad?

Three things, some people want to SLI, Crossfire or crypto currency mine, this may also increase the value of your secondhand gfx cards.

Fourth thing, the good thing about your PC bits is if you keep the box, instructions, sticker, socket protector, antistatic bag in mint condition someone somewhere will want that part because theirs is on the fritz.

My aging i5 2500k was £150 new donkeys years ago, it is still work £80-£70. I have the box and an unused cooper and I am entirely trustworthy, one careful owner.........

I find that a lot of the time people pay over odds on ebay, worked in my favour back in the days when I made few pennies on there reselling stuff.

My Sister does something similar.
She always says that she can't believe some people will buy way over the odds off eBay rather than walk into NEXT or buy off their site.
She also waits for those eBay offer days.
