Hi,

Does anyone have an Herman Miller Aeron chair?

I'm considering buying one as I've recently started having some back problems. My IKEA Marcus(?) chair has served me well but needs to go.

I went to John Lewis and sat on a couple and the Aeron was sublime.

I've seen second hand chairs on an auction site but not sure what the quality will be like. Anyone one experience?

I'm also considering buying new if 2nd hand is not viable.

Thanks

I did have Herman Miller Embody which is the top model. It cost me around £800 inc vat and delivery had it two years and sold it for £600 on GumTree. Lovely chair, in fact the best chair I've ever sat in but unfortunately didn't solve my back problem. I now stand in work all day using a Varidesk and this has helped no end.

I bought mine second hand, paid £250 and its in pretty good condition, I've had it around 3 years, tears in the fabric are common, and also the arm rests can be a bit wonky/broken, but on the whole you should be able to get a decent one.

There are a number of clearance office furniture shops around the Canary Wharf area, who specialise in shifting lots of ex-office chairs, I got mine from one such place - there's usually a good selection and you can obviously see them in the flesh before you buy.

I have an Aeron which I bought from new over 10 years ago. Once dusted, mine looks still looks like new and this is with pretty much daily use - I work from home.

Prior to buying it, I was getting through the cheaper chairs every couple of years, so in the end I have saved money.

Look up their size chart to make sure you get the right one, I needed a 'C' due to height + weight combination. Most on second-hand tend to be the 'B' size which is usually what a company will buy in bulk.

It is also worth finding a local office surplus store and seeing what they have. My missus didn't like the Aeron but found something very good at about a third the price.

Bought myself an Aeron a good 10+ years ago - paid around £700 new IIRC.
Fabulous chair... still sitting in it to this day!

I too was getting through cheaper chairs on an annual basis before that, so although it was expensive it was a great investment.

I bought my Aeron when in med school. I would spend 10 hours per day sitting on it and its still like new. Worth every penny.

Don't the Herman Millers come with a 10 year warranty? That alone makes it value for money, even over a 5 year life cycle IMO.

Haven't bit the bullet yet myself

I lasted 3 months with my Markus before I gave it away. I have a Mira which I chose over the Aeron due to the adjustable front on the seat. I have a week pelvis (old injury) and it will expose a poorly supportive seat in days. I have zero issue with the Mira and I have Aeron's in my office much the same. They are well worth the investment, will last you years and will look after your posture and back. If you live in London take a stroll to Herman Miller's HQ and they will make you a nice coffee and let you sit in their entire range.

You could also consider looking at Hag chairs

I have an older one but it is comfortable - seat adjust's forward and back - tilt - arms adjust along with height.

was going to link but as OCUK sells chairs do a google.

Im after a computer chair as well, currently use a standard dining chair and it kills my back after a while.

I want something that does not look to officey, unsure where to look, budget about £250?

And it needs to be able to fit under an old pedestal desk which is quite a small fit with the draws either side.

I have an Aeron for a few years too. Like the previous poster, the previous chairs were failing in some way after max 2 years or daily use. The Aeron still look like new, that was an excellent investment.

As a pro developer, I never skimp on chair, keyboard and screens. The rest is just not important.

Thanks for the replies.

It's funny, I've just started a new job today and they have Humanscale Different World chairs in the office. I've been sitting on one all morning and it seems very comfortable. They have always been bog standard chairs where I've worked in the past (I.T contractor so I've worked in many places).

So, I've not experienced any back pain after 4+ hours on this chair so I'm hoping an Aeron will be better (not always the case I know).

I've also read that the Aeron is an outdated (harsh word maybe 'old design' is better) model and that the Mirra 2 is newer and possibly better. But good designed chair is a good designed chair no matter how old? Right? Any comments on this?

I think I'm going to buy new, there are too many on the bay and I'm worried I might get a duff one (and not notice).

My office chair at work was an Aeron and I sat in it for 7-8 hours a day, 5 days a week. There was nearly a riot when we moved building and they sold them off to get us all the same chairs.

would recommend highly!

I recently bought a reconditioned steelcase leap for my home office. It is such a great chair, I never really feel like I am sitting in it, if that makes sense. I can just work/play from it and never feel sore or uncomfortable.

Used steelcase leap from the bay might suffice and save you some cash.

As Tone1979 said, can sit in it for hours at a time without feeling the need to stand up or adjust my position.

I've read good reviews of the steelcase leap chair and I guess I could try it out and see how it feels.

How does it compare to the Herman Miller chairs?
