Falkland Islands lie in Argentinian waters, UN commission rules

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet - does anyone have any ideas what the long term impact of this is beyond the usual noise form Argentina?

Affects on the oil?

I guess our response will be along the lines of "don't care, self determination trumps all else"

**** the UN. I'm generally favourable to them but this is utterly stupid and wrong. The Falkland Islands are 250 miles away from Argentina. Even if you had some super telescope, you wouldn't be able to see them from Argentina because the curvature of the Earth would stop you. How is that putting them in Argentinian waters? And how does it even matter where they lie? They're inhabited by British people who want to be British and who were the first actual settlers of the island in recorded history. France is well within 250 miles or Britain. Does that mean that France belongs to Britain regardless of the wishes of the French?

**** that.

Doesn't this mean, that in fact Argentina lies within the Falklands terratorial waters?

I do find it absurd that Argentina complains about our colonialism, while ignoring that they are as a country are an ex spanish colony that displaced the existing local population.

And became a country AFTER the Falkland Islanders were settled by British colonists.

Either way Argentina once had a valid claim but now they do not. Their actions were wrong and the consequences have been worse for them.

Argentina NEVER had a valid claim. The Falkland Islands were settled whilst it was still a Spanish colony - it wasn't even a country at the time. Nor did people from that region ever settle the islands. The most anyone has ever found on Argentina is a very, very old canoe. So far as we can tell, prior to British colonization the only inhabitants trying to make a living there have been the occasional survivor who was blown far, far out to sea and washed up there. Excepting that, there have been a couple of military bases with rotating personnel. The islands were first actually settled by the British. They're not even geographically part of Argentina given that they're nearly three hundred miles away from it.

Argentina has NEVER had a valid claim to the islands. Their claim rests solely on King Phillip of Spain in some distant past, drawing a vague circle on a dubious map and saying they could have this area. I'm unaware of any reason why the King of Spain's whimsy unrecognized by the rest of the world, should carry any weight in this matter.

If they want it, let them try and take it (again).

Or ideally, they could save a senseless waste of life by just not trying and accepting that they'll have to find some other way to distract their population from government ineptitude with their economy and civil rights.

Why stop, works for Russia.

When did Argentina have a valid claim and on what basis? The Falkland Islands were uninhabited until people from Europe settled there and they've been British since before Argentina existed. A French colony that was abandoned and a Spanish claim from a French claim that was never supported (did France officially claim one or more of the islands at all?) seems a rather dubious basis for a claim by a country that didn't even exist at the time. Being the closest larger country is obviously not a valid claim, particularly given the distance involved. Ireland is far closer to Britain than the Falklands Islands are to Argentina. Does that mean Britain owns Ireland? Does it mean that France owns Britain?

No, they are separate countries. Did you go to school?

There is a far better example - most of the south of the USA, which they took from Mexico by war and conquest relatively recently. So Mexico's claim on a huge part of the USA is far stronger than Argentina's claim on the Falkland Islands.

I could be wrong - but if they tried it now they would actually succeed. Cameron did a major ****-up and got rid of our only aircraft carrier (Ark Royal) five years before its planned decommision while the current one isn't even ready yet and won't be for a few years.

The Falklands are totally vulnerable.

The only reason why we need the Falklands, is because of the Oil that is underneath it....................................
