New "fun" car time - looking for suggestions

I have no doubt that the TT-RS will be numb in comparison to the others. How numb is the question that will need some answering.

You have to remember I came from a very short geared 400bhp STi where there was just so much involvement in keeping up with the gear changes :D The thrill from the short burts of acceleration were also a big part of the involvement. Acceleration feel is much more exciting with short gearing.

Who knows, the TT-RS might well be the one for me. Reality is that it's steering and very understeery nature will put me off.

Other options that I haven't considered are cars that have had some money spent on mods already. However, a feel for the standard car is required before I even begin to think about modified versions.

But this is what test drives are for. I'm in no rush to buy anything. The longer it takes, the more I have to spend. :)

Only you can decide m8, the TT RS acceleration is very impressive, but it is very smooth as the turbo has a broad powerband and the gearing is not so short so it won't be as explosive or frantic through the gears like your Scooby was though it will be more or less as quick just won't feel it.

I think you will like it though, like I say the powerplant is superb, just the chassis is not the best though grip levels are good.

Supra.. straight line beast with some ££££ thrown at it, otherwise not interested. Doesn't fit my chuckablility quota I don't think?

With the right mods they are weapons on the track, two brothers from Birmingham use their supras on the track and run rings around supercars and are only running circa 600bhp.

A TT6 will cost you around £16-17k, a single turbo kit done properly would cost you an additional 10k. Buying a single'd one you can pay around £20k. a lot to pay for a 20+ year car but you have super car performance.

Agreed. Supras have had their heyday, they're now heading towards collectors territory with prices to match.

For that £20k you can get one hell of a fun car.

Super car performance? You mean super cars from the 90's maybe? ;)

I don't consider 8:20 (full lap) or 1:30+ Donnington lap times super car performance, not even remotely close. If anything the video's show what a poor handling car the Supra is even with money thrown at it considering cars with less power lap faster.

In a straight line once moving yes a Supra is very fast and yes the engine is absolutely superb for how bullit proof and strong they are. :)

Still 20k for any 10-20yr old car heavily modified is going to be quick, but super car quick is so much more than just rolling starts which is the Supra's strong point, corners and off the line are not its strengths. :)

Don't get me wrong I love Supra's think they look superb, have aged so well and the engine is a master piece, but handling is not their strength, I've over taken much more capable cars on track days even in my 525i SE, the car was not quicker I was just the better driver or they were doing a cooling off lap, but lets stick with I am the better driver. ;)

those were like 8 years ago though lol not sure what his setup was then.
I think he recently did the ring last year in 7min40 but with slicks

BTG though which is always a good amount shorter than a full lap which I believe is what the manufacturers post up, 7:40 would be around a 8:10 full lap. :)

His 8yr old video say 500BHP, its not slow but it is by no mean super car quick at lapping tracks.

Yeah, coz a 600 BHP supra wont be fun...

I never said it won't be fun, but you can get something considerably better / faster / more reliable for £20k nowadays. Don't get me wrong, I love Supras but I'd never spend £20k on one.

In fact, I'd probably buy a Golf for £10k and a Caterham for fun days. Best of both worlds.

But Supras aren't worth 20k, only highly modified single turbos that have had more than double than that spent on them go for that sort of money.

A typical TT BPU will be about 6k.

They are appreciating a bit because they are such an iconic car but they are still very good value. I sold mine for a healthy profit but I'd happily buy one back at that value.

The problem here is that it doesn't really fit the chuckable requirement. I use to drive mine at 45* angles on bad tyres which was fun, but you can end up facing the wrong way. A good friend of mine spun his on an empty slip road last year not predicting it correctly.

I'm paraphrasing, but wut?
Define 'Faster'?

- Around a race track (let's say the Nurburgring if that's your bag) there will be lots of cars that could keep up or go faster.

- If 'faster' means in the penis extension straight-line sense then of course a £20k Supra will go a lot faster than almost everything at the price point. Not sure I'd want to waste £20k on that though.

In fairness this is a driver problem not a car problem.
