Can you claim a dumped car?

I suspect it is highly unlikely this will go very far but just in case.

My mother lives in a flat down on a local marina. She has complained a couple of times about a car that has been parked quite badly taking up two spaces and it hasn't moved for 2 weeks. No one knows who it belongs too. Apparently its been keyed and generally looks tatty.

However, my mother reckons it says Silver on the back. "It's a Toyota Silver or something" bless her :)

So, showing her a pic of an S14 Silvia she thinks this is the car. "It's got a great big wing on the back like the ones you like" Again, bless :)

I can't imagine for a second someone doesn't want this thing back. There's a guy in the block that has something to do with some JDM race series (Nippon I think) and he's got his eye on it too.

So, in the unlikely event this car goes unclaimed, is it possible to get this car into my ownership?

2 weeks?

2 years and maybe...

TBH i think the car will be towed by council and sold off at auction if no one comes to claim it and pay fines, after its run out of tax and so on.

If its taxed and insured its allowed to sit there and rot forever!

First thing I'd do is report it to the police on 101, they probably wont care but they will ask for the reg and where it is, maybe its been stolen and dumped, in which case if the owner has reported it stolen, the police, you'd hope will be able to match up the number plate and advise the owner where it is?

I think the only way is for the council to tow it and buy it at auction. I don't think they are allowed to just let you but it directly like that.

It's not like a boat where you get salvage rights on abandoned vessels :P

Trying to claim a car after 2 weeks of not moving :p

You'd have a field day on Heathrow's long stay car park.

I looked in to this as at my brother's old really nice flat in Edinburgh. It had a 6 series BMW sat in the underground garage for over 4 years without moving. It was like brand new, such a shame.

I'd be pretty hacked off if someone tried to take ownership of my car if I left it, dirty, in a car park and went on holiday for 2-3 weeks :p

I think you can send off to get the V5 etc but only on cars that have been 'dumped' longer than 5 years and the DVLA try to give the owner a chance to object.

No idea if true or what abandoned means in this context.

how could you claim it without keys?
Tell the DVLA the V5 was sent off but you've never received a new one.
Supply details, sit back and wait.

If the registered keeper doesn't reply to them then a new V5 would be issued in your name.

Probably not legal int he slightest, and your still without keys!
worth a try tho eh :p

V5 is also not proof of ownership.

didnt say it proved he was the owner ;) but with the V5 in his name, he could then insure and Tax... then he could contact a locksmith to get him into "his" car and sort out the lack of keys.

How else would you prove to a locksmith that you were the "owner"

I did say not legal in the slightest :p

Didn't think there was a lot of mileage in it :)

Just seems a shame IF it gets carted off on the back of a council trailer.

I don't believe an S14 will have just been dumped. If indeed that is what it is.

But why would it? Its a bit of a leap tbf. I don't look at cars that are parked up for 2 weeks and think.... ill have that because nobody is sat in it!.

Yh agreed, it's hardly dumped as per the title if it has only been 2 weeks.

You can apply for the v5 of pretty much anything iirc, though the owner will be contacted to make sure the ownership claim is ok, and I assume pretty ****ed off after two weeks!

If it has indeed been dumped, do you not think there's a jolly good reason?

Either it's been nicked and joyridden, or it's utter junk and not worth the tarmac it's sat on.
