Can you claim a dumped car?

So what? Registered keeper or whichever terminology you like - you knew exactly what I meant anyway

Well no the v5 would simply allow you to tax and insure the vehicle. You still wouldn't be able to gain entry or drive the vehicle without consent of the owner.

Whilst technically true that is simply not the way "most" people view ownership.

There aren't many arrangements outside of lease type deals whereby the v5 holder does not have a say in who can or cannot claim ownership of the vehicle. Particularly unlikely when you're talking about an older car

The technicalities between registered keeper and owner are unlikely to matter here

Wouldn't sending off for the log book be classed as theft, changing the cars locks as criminal damage, and insuring the car fraud... Just a thought:p

I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that in some specific cases you can get a v5c issued in your name on an abandoned vehicle, but as you don't gain ownership of the vehicle the actual owner could come back at any time and say they want their car back.

Even if you did manage to get it registered to you, it has been dumped for a reason. Do you really want to spend the money on getting it running/maintaining it only to have someone take it away from you with no payment? I'd just report to council/police and forget about the car.

If you don't own the car you shouldn't have any financial interest in it. If insurance is already running on the car this would be looked on as potential fraud.

Went to have a look at this car last night. Turns out it's not an S14. It's a 1998 R34 Skyline GTT

Checked and it's insured, MOT'd and Taxed. It's in fairly bad shape but I don't think it's been stolen or dumped.

Cars nicked from Swansea have turned up there before but was a fairly long time ago and only happened twice that I know of.

Will call Police and they can find the owner.

I highly doubt anyone would dump an r34 GTT just like that, in good nick they're worth 10-14k!

and are pretty rare

You can pay £5 or s on the DVLA website and get the registered owner.
Also check the insurance on askmid and MOT on MOT history.
I mean, if it is insured and MOT'd then it's probably a no goer.

how could you claim it without keys?
Tell the DVLA the V5 was sent off but you've never received a new one.
Supply details, sit back and wait.

If the registered keeper doesn't reply to them then a new V5 would be issued in your name.

Probably not legal int he slightest, and your still without keys!
worth a try tho eh :p

That you only make you the registered keeper, not the owner.
