Hi all,

My neighbour, it's a semi detached, is an old lady. Mid 80's and completely deaf as a post.

This means her tv is put on so loud and same with her radio in the morning, it is bad enough I feel like I am sitting in her front room with her in an evening as its so loud I know exactly what she is watching, to the extent you can hear it over whatever we may be watching. This would be bad enough but the volume is also keeping my kids from falling asleep and waking them up in the morning.

What do I do? I get on well with the neighbour, lovely woman and I think if I asked her to turn it down she probably would but then I hate the thought of the poor woman sitting there with nothing to do. It's not her fault but it's really getting beyond a joke, it seems to be getting louder by the week.

Anyone had a similar issue or had it with a relative and can offer some advice? I've thought of speaking to her daughter who pops found a couple of times a week but again not sure how she could help.

Any advice would be appreciated.

A gift of wireless headphones?

Low frequencies are more of an issue in this set-up, so maybe have a chat about helping her tune her kit. If not possible, then I'd still have a friendly chat about turning the volume down in the evenings at least. She may not realise how loud it actually gets.

I'm severely deaf and I just switch to headphones after 8PM. Read subtitles etc if I'm still struggling.

To get an idea of how loud something is, just touch or hold the device to assess it from its vibration. E.g. I can tell if my phone's sound is on without my hearing aids in (and not hearing a thing) because the handset does feel 'alive' :-)

Had the same problem at my last place and here to some extent. Not much you can do really!

If she's a nice gal (which by the sounds of it she is) then perhaps reaching a compromise as has been suggested in terms of headphones after a certain time, and get her a good set of over ear ones might be the best option.

I'm not deaf at all, but i exclusively use headphones on the pc for late night gaming to prevent the sounds of gunfire waking up the house.
