Looking for a car to replace my BMW 520d

Then why not keep his current 520d? Saves a pile of money and is probably no more hassle. It isn't suddenly going to implode because it's done 200k. It might need a turbo at some point but of course so might an F10, if it doesn't eat it's timing chain first.

I did :p

My point is that he's already had the 'why not keep my 520d' discussion with himself and has decided that it's unsuitable - therefore why would buying more of the same but a couple of years newer be any different? It's even got exactly the same engine fitted :D

I don't dispute its a great car, but this isn't a 'spec me an amazing car' thread is it, it's spec me an efficient and sensible way to reliably cover 30k a year without hassle.

Lol, but it could be that thread!

And as I said as well though, the OP seems to be getting pressurised from a certain highly hormonal direction so perhaps isn't making the decisions at all. I just think an F10 is something to consider alongside the other options he's been presented with.

Well I got the call I didn't want today. My car has been in the garage and he has told me the high pressure fuel pump needs replacing at the cost of £1600 inc labour. He said he read 3 pages of faults after running diagnostics and this points to the fuel pump. He said he couldn't be certain that this would fix it either as the problems could be deeper still. Basically telling me I could fix this problem and another problem could occur next week.

Last year I had the timing chain done and also the dpf removed and cleaned at great expense. I need to look for a new car as this one is too unreliable now. Sods law I have just put 4 new tyres on it too :(

Does anyone know where would take in part ex or buy a BMW with engine problems?

eurocarparts for £614 then find someone fit it.
No where near £1600.

I would also take it to another garage and have it checked out. Too many rip off garages around.

He said the last one came to £1600 with all the labour involved. Something about the injectors also. Sorry I'm rubbish when it comes to cars.

Took my car for an mot failed they said £350 needed to be spent.
Took it to another garage and past with no advisories I even showed then what the other garage said it failed on.

Trouble is a lot of mechanics are rip offs.
Always get an second opinion.

I'm struggling at the moment as my usual garage Peter Van Der Veer in Hudderfield is closed until the 12th April. It's the first time I have used this garage as it was close to home.

What exactly makes you think there is something wrong with the car?
Is it running fine ?

It broke down. I was driving and the engine light came on. It then went in to limp mode for a couple of miles before It eventually just came to a stop. I got it towed to this garage as I knew my usual one was on holiday and this one was near my home.

It starts but as soon as you give it some revs it stalls.

Could be the crankshaft sensor

As already pointed out, it isn't going to suddenly implode as it passes 200k, keep it, run it into the ground, spend the majority of your £13k budget on enjoying the new arrival (holiday,Mammas & Pappas pram, buggy et al, decorating the nursery etc etc etc) and keep a bit back for if & when the 520d needs a bit of work.

Ignore the Mrs, in her current state her hormones and thought process will be a lot more bat**** than normal for a woman.

You might want to read the last few posts, look like it might have just imploded!

That situation is exactly what you need to minimise the risk of when you're doing big miles for your job. I know we see a lot of people here saying "my 06 focus needs new tyres and brake pads, I want to spend 10k replacing it" and 9 times out of 10 the logic is really faulty. But this time I really do get it. Maybe 13k is too much, we don't know the rest of his personal finances but we could assume he's sensible enough to work that out. If manufacturers warranty is a priority then it sounds pretty reasonable

When I was doing that sort of mileage for work (was 2 or 3 times a week up and down the m4 corridor or the a303/35 from exeter) I traded the Saab I had in against a PCP on the 508. That was on the forecourt for 14k iirc, my monthly mileage claims pretty much covered the whole costs (PCP+fuel+insurance/tax) month on month so was effectively a free car for me. When my job shifted a bit 18 months later and I'm spending more time in London and abroad, I sold it back to the dealer and got back pretty much what the Saab was worth when I traded it in - so it cost me nothing. Putting aside the fact that the Saab was a saloon and I was lugging big boxes around, I could have kept it and been in "profit" but a situation like the OP just had could have lost my company a sale.. Not a risk I was willing to take.

Each to their own, but I do feel I can put myself in the shoes of the OP so I'd not be so quick to encourage him to keep it myself.

I'd seen the last few posts but still can't help thinking dropping £13k on a car at such a time isn't good, babies cost - mine did and still does 19years on! - I would personally fix the 520d assuming it's nothing too terminal, half his budget fixes an awful lot of mileage related issues on such a car whilst leaving capital free for the sprog....

But you're fixated on the cost, the point I keep trying to make is that there are normally bigger things in play than just outright cost. If he was doing 10k a year just commuting then I'd agree with you.

I also agree that spending too much on a car when you have a kid is a bad idea, but we don't know about his finances - he might be mortgage free with 100k in the bank for all we know. If 13k is a stretch then he absolutely should reconsider the approach but it's too much of a blanket statement without all the details.

Indeed. I get it too. The cost is probably worth it against the potential annoyance to his place of work because he can't get somewhere on time (or at all) due to yet another problem with his car.

It's all very well saying cars can be run into the hundreds of thousands of miles if you maintain them etc, but that's usually from an enthusiast perspective. Relying on one for 30,000 yearly miles of trouble-free motoring is a risky move.

It's also not like it's a 100k car that's known to be trouble free either - it's a 200k BMW diesel!

Motors can be quite guilty of parrot advice - we do see regular posts along the lines of a 100k petrol focus, must replace it because it needs minor repairs and understandably the advice is just to fix it. While this situation is similar, the advice really shouldn't be a copy and paste from those other threads
