Hi,

I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 and have now changed my monitor. The monitor is a HP Elite E231. When I connected for the first time I got the "Out of Range" error message and asked to change to 1920 x 1080 by 60hz. and the monitor shut down every 30 seconds. The highest resolution I could select to get rid of the message and get it to stay on is 1400 x 1050 which is the wrong aspect ratio and my images are elongated.

HP website says enable VGA or low resolution and I have done that and made it permanent on boot up, but it had made no difference. My video adapter says it is a Microsoft Generic Basic or something similar. All of the available choices of resolution are the 4:3 ratio and the highest that works is the one above.

How can I get to the higher resolutions that my system is capable of and get the 16:9 ratios?

Any help would be appreciated.

I am connected with a VGA cable. Device Manager and System Information both say "Microsoft Generic Basic" or something like that for the display adaptor so not sure how to find the GPU.

I have tried updating the driver for the adaptor and it says I have the best one available. I have also uninstalled the driver and rebooted and just the same.

Use a Displayport or DVI-D cable. You're mental if you're using analogue VGA(blue) on a flat panel.

You need to find out about your video card, or tell us what the exact PC specs are, so we can do it for you.

Many thanks for your input and I will look into this however I thought this was a help forum and not a platform for abusive comments.

This sounds like upgrading to Windows 10 has removed your correct graphics card drivers and replaced them with a generic one, if you have a separate graphics card you just need to find out the details of the one you have most have this detail on the card somewhere and this should help you work out where you need to go to download the latest drivers however you may also have on board graphics as you didn't say weather you had a GPU or not so if you do have on board graphics then you will need to go to the motherboard site and download the latest windows 10 drivers for you motherboard, again you should be able to see the details of your motherboard printed on it.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Have you got your build spec from when you bought it?

Will tell you which gfx card you have (if any) then you just need to download the correct driver for Win 10.

OK many thanks for all the help and some further information below.

Motherboard - ASUS M2N68-AM SE2 with on board graphics

NVIDIA GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a

I only have a VGA port on the motherboard and am currently connected with a blue VGA cable to the monitor. I take it there is no point in using an adaptor to change to DVI as the output from the board will still be the same?
