Gym advert targetting fat people is offensive

See the ocuk perfect are out again even though statistically it can't be a place of perfection.

Indeed, these type of threads always makes me wonder how many of the "Fat people disgust me!!" brigade have ever smoked, binge drank, driven their car too fast etc. All of those things can be a burden on society too. Do they get disgusted with the skinny guy who eats crap all the time too??? (of which I know a few) :) :)

Then stop wearing spandex?

Speaking of tight fitting clothes... What is with this trend I see with larger women for the last few years or so who don't have the figure. They aren't crazy huge but nowhere near slender yet wear stupid tight like tank tops and skin tight jeans with everything bulging and stupidly dyed red hair... Their legs always look like they are ready to burst as if they spent 10 minutes crawling on their back trying to pop into them.

Soon as they walk or any fast movement everything really jiggles horribly badly. Yet they seem to think this is a good look? God forbid they drop anything as those jeans could be a nasty accident.

Whilst I'm not offended by this ad I do think that the attitude of a lot of gyms, and those who attend them, is pretty poor towards overweight people who want to go.

I'm overweight and unfit. I know I am and I want to do something about it. I'm changing my diet but that will only achieve so much - I can't get fit through diet alone.

Going to the gym, for me, is hard because there are so many judgemental people there. As I walk in I can sometimes feel the collective eyes of all the super healthy people looking at me saying "what are YOU doing here?". The same when I can't run 10k on a treadmill in one go or can't sit on the cycle machine for an hour non-stop.

Overweight people going to the gym should be supported the most - they're people who know that they need to better themselves and are doing something about it and yet the attitude towards us sucks a lot of the time which only puts us off going even more.

If that is really true, I think you should change gyms. I also think that maybe, you have become insecure and paranoid so assume people are judging you. I bet nine times out of ten, they are not.

I go to a more expensive gym, I'm fed up with the 18 quid a month ones.

No fancy bs, just pay in cash for the month and train. everything is iron, sweaty and dirty and I love it.

It is the best gym in my town, it doesn't attract the young skinny lads who spend more time checking to see if they have abs yet, texting and talking than training. Its obvious most of the guys there are juicing, but they also take their training seriously and actually, are the nicest gym goers you'll meet, always happy to shout at you if you need a spot and a push and will always remain courteous and helpful if you ask, assuming you keep to those unwritten rules, basically be courteous yourself and aware of who's next to / behind you and what equipment is being used.

I think that's the sort of gym you need and will absolutely love it when you realise that the decent folk are actually the big guys, they are as body conscious as you trust me.

There are a lot of snobby posers though. I've read these same topics other people have experienced on other forums.

Snobby posers are often more concerned about themselves over everyone else and tbh get judged more so because of it.

Only a few people give a second thought to an overweight person getting fit but everyone in the room including the other posers hates the douchebag snobby posers.

My old gym use to have a wall of shame of CCTV screens of people standing in front of the mirror lifting their shirts, flexing while sitting on the flat bench and a double pic with the time stamp of people just sitting on the machines texting. They had a few complaints and lost a few members at first but the place became a lot more popular with fitness groups in the area and filled up with the right people. Eventually they had to take the thing down though :(

The snobby posers that hog the equipment even when it doesn't get used? Again according to others.

What if someone finds fat people offensive?

As someone who was once a fatty and lost 9 stone in the past 15 months, down to a healthy 13 stone at 6ft 1" I can honestly agree with you. Knowing how easy it was for me to lose that weight when I just put my mind to it and paid attention to what I was eating rather than just devouring anything and everything, it baffles me why someone would let them self's go.

Simply put fix your diet first and the rest will follow. You don't even need to go to the gym to lose weight. 95% of weight loss is eating the right food and right quantities of it.

You managed it in the first place?

Putting on weight is 100% down to diet, exercise will never be the difference between being overweight and being in good shape. It's all diet.

not completely true, diet is very important but exercise can certainly play a part too in both burning calories and increasing your metabolism - ideally you should be doing both

for an extreme example Royal Marine recruits consume 5000 calories per day across 4 meals and don't tend to get fat!

yup - according to some past threads on BMI high numbers don't worry most OCUK posters as they're all serious bodybuilders/elite atheletes
