Thinking of moving to BT infinity, just wanted some opinions

Hi guys,

I've done some searching on these forums and could only find a post from 2011 so wanted to see what your thoughts were about BT infinity? I'm currently with Virgin Media and honestly, i've never experienced such incompetence in all my life at every level as well as the connection being utter dog**** with constant drop-outs and packet loss in peak hours. (long story short, posted here before about packet loss, on going for 7 weeks now and still not solved or usable at peak hours).

I hear that BT infinity has better upload speed than Virgin although my options limit me to around 80mbps instead of Virgin's 200. Thing is if BT offer a more stable service along with their better upload i'll make the switch, just wanted to get some upto date opinions really as I can't wait to leave these clowns.
 
I'm quite happy with the ~76Mb BT Infinity, aside of the Hub 5 that can't be set to bridge mode.

At least where I live now, I get ~70Mb down, ~18Mb up and ping to gateway seems to be about 8ms. Nothing much to complain and I've yet to notice any meaningful fluctuations in these speeds.

50+ Mb download speeds are "enough" for me so that games from Steam or updates to PS4 is a complete non-issue and wife watching HD streams from netflix or iplayer doesn't seem to have much effect on my own usage.

I'm with bt and was a hassle getting it installed but has been fine since. Would recommend buying you're own router though as the home hub isn't the best.

I tried inputting my phone number and no data was available. Maybe it's because my phone is current with Virgin Media?


I tried the post code checker and all I got was data about ADSL and ADSL 2?
When I did a service check on BT's website I got this though:

Also I just did a postcode check, does the below relate to BT inifinity? Should I be worried as those speeds look awful even though after putting my postcode on BT's website it tells me I get a minimum of 60mbps?

Try the 'address checker' instead of just the postcode checker, so you input your house no. and postcode. The BT site looks like you can get the full 76-80Mb anyway.

If you move to BT, if you look on Quidco right now you can get £130 cashback I believe, then a further £125 Mastercard prepaid card from BT. ;)

I ran the address checker and got the below, does this look like i'm good (im not sure what to make of it, dont know much about it)

I wasn't sure if BT infinity 2 is classed as FTTC (for example)

BT infinity 2 is what is listed when I visit their site as an option along with 1.

Yes you want BT Unlimited Infinity 2, it's a FTTC service as you mentioned.

In terms of speed it's an 'up to 76Mb' profile. However looking at your stats posted you're likely to get the near full if not the max speeds anyway. Upload speed will also be 18-20Mb.

Go for it, just make sure you register and sign up with BT via Quidco for the £130 cashback. Then claim the £125 Mastercard prepaid card from BT directly once live. :)

Thanks man, you've all been really helpful! I'm so livid with Virgin Media and how poor their support and service has been. 8 weeks and they're still not able to resolve constant connection drops and packet loss - unbelievable. Really looking forward to getting a solid connection, even if the download speeds are slower.
 
'Touchwood' never had a problem. Had since October, everything delivered couple of days before activation and they activated on the day they said they would. Only had that one time the whole of BT went down.

I'm assuming that if I order it i'll get an engineer to come and install it? How come they just sent you the stuff?
 
FTTC used to be engineer installed but now isn't.

You might get an engineer visit if there isn't an existing and active BT phone line, but they won't be interested in plugging your router in for you.
 
I can't get Infinity, so just normal Broadband for me.
I found the service pretty generic as far as BT reviews go - Namely that once it's up and running, it's great - You can expect a couple of teething problems during install/setup and the initial bedding in, plus if anything ever goes wrong it will be a minor headache sorting it out, upon which it'll usually be a "fault at the exchange" which gets resolved pretty quick.
Uptime is constant and to my recallection I haven't lost connection, had to restart my router or anything for well over 2 years now.

Just wanted to update and thank you again for the info! I Ordered BT infinity 2 this weekend and got £110 via quidco and the prepaid MasterCard deal. Hopefully installation goes ok!
 
Been with infinity (business) for about 2 years now on my home premise. get 76mb download and 17mb upload with 5 static ip's.

I've had about 4 service outages during this time (all bt related) with the maximum outage being around 6 hours (the recent major outage that affected entire UK).
