R9 290X - crossfire?

Hi all,

I've had a MSI R9 290X for the last year. love the card and there's nothing wrong with it. I've recently built a new rig (thanks OC!) and am absolutely chuffed to have got off my old 1366 I7 950. I am however thinking about going for my first Crossfire set up.

Now, I've scoured google for answers and cannot accurately put my finger on this issue.

Do I do the follow:

  • Buy a R9 390X and replace my R9 290X (i'd rather not do this).
  • Buy a R9 390X and try to crossfire with my existing R9 290X. I understand that the architecture is the same, so in theory, this should work, right? (AMD's website hasn't been updated..).
  • Buy a R9 290X off fleabay or amazon for grossly inflated prices for a new one?

I'm also having trouble ascertaining whether crossfire is actually worth doing. Lot of internet hearsay causes more questions that it answers.

My spec is as follows:

CPU - I7 6700k (stock at 4.00ghz with Antec AIO CPU Cooler)
MB - Gigabyte GA Z170X Gaming7 (usual **** MB names :p)
RAM - HyperX Savagesomethingsomething. Using dual-channel set up at 1066MHz.
PSU - bequiet! powerzone 850w.
Monitor - Asus VE228 (1920x1080)

PC is purely for gaming. Portfolio of games atm is Dragon Age (1-3), diablo 3, CS:GO, Witcher 3, Atilla Total War & v soon (warhammer total war). Is crossfire pointless for these titles?

Thanks it advance!

Multi-GPU don't seem to be too great thesedays, so it's probably worth considering just upgrading to a card that faster by big enough margin.

Best to stick with the 290x and wait for next gen new cards.

buying a 390x would not be good.

I say sell your card and buy a 980 or if you can stretch a 980ti

Although I don't want to I have to agree with the above ... I have been AMD for the past 5 years and the Multi GPU thing on both sides of the fence doesn't seem to be working as it should IMO.

I have been running crossfire 7970's and then R9 390X's and while when benchmarking they were flying when it came to gaming it was a bit of a lottery for me so after all this time I have not only gone back to a single card I have gone back to the green side after 5 years ....

I am now using an MSI 980Ti and it is a very nice card not the best 980Ti out there ( or so I am told ) but it fits with my system nice and the cooler and fan setup is very quiet. I decided to go with the MSI one as I had crossfire MSI 390X's and the temps and fans were fantastic.

As above, Crossfire is rubbish, im on my first Crossfire, and its my last, had Crossfire disabled for months and months now, i just use a single card, will be switching to single Polaris/Pascal when they hit.

Another crossfire first timer here. Definitely a hit and miss experience and something I will not do again unless things improve drastically...

Slight hi-jack but does anyone know how much 7950's / R9 280's go for on the second hand market?
