Best budget card

forget the ssd thats not going to be a big impact with a graphics card(dont know why people keep forcing ssd on everything), but while a 280x or 290x or something equivalent from nvidia be ideal as mentioned a system spec is needed otherwise just throwing models at you ;)

(dont know why people keep forcing ssd on everything)

You don't have an SSD I take it? They are an enormous system-wide upgrade that affects your entire PC. You could easily argue that taking a few quid out of your GPU budget to replace an old mechanical drive will provide better overall results than simply getting the best GPU you can afford.

I seriously can't stand using a PC without an SSD, it's infinitely frustrating. This isn't the question at hand though is it?

If you can get an R9 290/X second hand it would deffo have the best performance per £ for your money, though some units will likely be over 2 years old now which would worry me a little for the price.

GTX970 could also be had second hand for similar price and is much less power hungry while similar performance level.

380x if u want a new card for a bit more than yuour budget but if you can get a 2nd hand card better for the same money go for it.

depends on the resolution, for 1080p at 60hz a 380x would be perfect, although its rumoured that in june, the new Polaris cards will be out, and you should get much more for your money by then

As the chaps above have said, it depends on the other bits in the system.

What PSU is in the rig?

I'd lean towards the second-hand market as you can pick up a 290X (the same as a 390X) for £130 - £140 or so if you hunt around.

Glad this came up. I am putting together a gaming/media PC for the lounge in the next few months. It only has to drive a 1080p screen and I can wait for the AMD nvidia launches. As it is going to be for the lounge I am hoping to see a really strong budget card from one of them with a low TDP that can run quiet. Potentially also the next gen of APU matched with fast DDR4 could be plenty.
