I'm looking at moving up to 6 cores, ddr4 and a clean W10 install. I'm looking for a mobo that will allow me to run 2 x 980ti as far apart as possible for air cooling (initially).
So possibly 3 x 16x pcie 3.
What would be the benefit of the really top end boards?
Is there going to be great deal of difference between a 5920 x99 and a 6850 z170?
Andi.

Recently bought a Gigabyte GA 99 SLI which has very nice spacing for my 2 ti's as they are spaced over 3 PCiE slots rather than just 2 like some other boards. I believe all Gigabyte boards are like this.

It lacks any WiFi adapter which the higher spec ones feature and doesn't come with much in the box but it works. The thing I miss the most the most which I haven't had since my Z68 board is the inclusion of an onboard debug LED.

It also doesn't feature an "ASUS OC socket" if your interested in extreme clocks.

I also owned the Asus Sabertooth x99 which was good for spacing but seemed to sacrifice a pci e in the middle for it. The board developed issues so I returned it.

Better sound, more USB and SATA etc.

Maybe even more power phases and higher quality parts such as capacitors/mosfets.

Cheers Stulid, I don't the sound USB or SATA but what do the "extra power phases" give me. This is purely a games PC.

More stable voltages for overclocking/more phases means the load is spread across them more so each doing that bit less work, might add to longevity?

Cheers, I tend not to keep many bits in this PC for very long ;-)

Final question, X99 or Z170 and wait for 6 core 6800?

Andi.

I don't see the point of waiting for 10 core broadwell if the OP already stated that the pc will be for gaming purely.
I would suggest to get a good Z170 board with nice pcie spacing and the i7 6700K then you are good to go.
Well if you insist on moving to 6 core platform then 5820K + Gigabyte X99 SOC Champion is imho the best combo atm.
