Help me buy a new suit

M&S/Next. Blue is fashionable at the moment, but fashions come and go. Go for a dark grey/charcoal (but not black), and that'll cover you for funerals if needed.. And if you are set on this one doing you for years to come, get the trousers with adjustable waistband; you may not need it now...

Charcoal/Grey or Navy (proper navy not the Thomas the Tank Engine Fat Controller blue that all the little finance wide boys seem to wear around the Wharf). Single breasted.

M&S, John Lewis or Austin Reed.

Blue(as in dark/Navy) has been fairly standard for a while now. No reason why you can't wear it to a funeral either.

thanks for all the replies guys

Never heard of slaters, not one even nearly close to me unfortunately.

i was looking at tm lewin and charles Tyrwhitt, mainly because ive bought a few of there shirtly lately and ive been impressed, seemed nicer than the next and M+S shirts i have.

i ruled out M+S as nothing seems to fit me from there. the T-shirts are huge, with the smallest neck ever... wierd.

i ruled out next since everything seems slim fit, skinny fit or wearing womens clothes fit. i am not slim. i'm not huge, by any means, but i have put on weight since i gave up smoking. i am fairly normally proportioned though, not particularly long arms etc.

i'd need to measure myself again, but i think i'm about:

46 or 48" chest
35" sleeve length
17" collar
36" waist
32" leg

i'm about 5ft8 ish

i will have a look at both of those, as maybe i was too hasty.

TM lewin and Charles Tyrwhitt both have lots of info on there website about measuring yourself and give plenty of info about the fit of there shirts etc.

examples: (if the links work)

next are noticably cheaper though:

even cheaper ones available too.

i guess i need to go look at some... no idea when i'll find the time...

hmmm anyone tried a lm lewin / tywhitt and compared it with a next / M&S?

what are the measurement services like at Next and M&S?

thanks guys

Not blue as in the blue in the OCUK logo.

nah not that, but as in everyone aside from big ears is wearing a single breasted blue suit in the below photo:

personally that's what I'd go for for a first suit, tis standard and suitable for anything from job interviews, work wear to weddings

M&S / Next will not fit as well as the TM Lewin slim range. Most of the well fitting suits at M&S / Next are poor quality and cheaper. TM Lewin is a decent mix of both.

Also TM Lewin seem to have more knowledgeable people than M&S and next, not tailors by any means but certainly more helpful then "looks alright".

Good advice going for a navy suit, works with most shirt and tie combinations and you can also wear black/brown shoes. If you are only going to have 1/limited number of suits, go for something classic and adaptable.

Well yeah I guess with TM Lewin you'll be served by someone who has at least done a measuring course. Fit can vary between individuals though so M&S is still worth a look too, some stores that offer their 'tailoring' service will probably also have people who can measure you properly too.

You're 5'8" with a 48" chest but a not enormous 36" waist?

You're going to struggle with the high street. That's the measurements of a body builder. For sure you'll need mix and match trousers and jacket because a 36" waist trouser is going to come with a 42" jacket I would think.

I got a good suit from Matallan recently, went back for a Tuxedo when I had a black tie do to goto, went back for that too, much preferred the quality compared to what I saw at Next which surprised me tbh.

Try TKMax, you may get a shirt and tie, belt and shoes.

M&S are good for suits, think 1xjacket and 2x trousers. You tend to give your pants a hammering, so your suit will last a long time.
