New "fun" car time - looking for suggestions

Don't think the new Type R is any where near special enough to be a contender. I think you would regret it as a purchase, especially when you take a bath on the depreciation.

Saw this - http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...huge-spec-dry-sump-kit-30k--spent/4574527?v=b

What's the catch there... 550hp for less than £25k on an admittedly old car, but still, seems like a lot of car for the money and if you like your mods.

Provided the GFV is sensible so you don't come out the end of it with nothing left, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a high deposit. Total cost is the only thing that matters - but remember you're paying interest on all of the loan, higher interest than the money would be earning in a savings account too.

I guess this sort of advice is why people still living with parents end up trying to save for a mortgage deposit while paying a ridiculous amount for a car. 5k a year for a new STi sounds pretty reasonable to me!

£10k down, 6000 miles, £127pm, 36 month PCP. Dealer discount. Car in stock, dark grey metallic (lovely colour) - delivery miles.

I am gonna do a fox and say £14572 to drive a Civic for 3 years. :p

For reference you could get a brand new Audi TTS Coupé 2.0 TFSI quattro Manual for £260 a month (putting £10k down as deposit).

I still think that the £127pm is silly low, but maybe it's just me. All the PCP deals I've gone through with dealers have been £10-15k down with payments over £200 for similar amounts as the STi.

When I get the full figures tomorrow I can think about it properly.

I would much rather put more money down and lower payments than I would putting less money down. As mentioned, I'll pay more interest than I'll make, even in my Santander 1-2-3 account. I've always thought, if you've got the money to put it down, do so. If I didn't have the capital, I wouldn't be looking at cars full stop. Hence the original post of £10k down if using any finance and £15k if buying outright.

There are loads of STis/Evos/GTRs with big power out there for not a lot of money. Ultimately I haven't finished trying all the cars I want to yet, so still some things to think about. Takes the fun out of it a bit if the car is pre-built mind :D

Also, I forgot to mention that I tried getting a go in a Lotus, went to a specialist, but he pretty much said it's unlikely for me to have a test drive with him unless there was a specific car that I wanted that he had in stock. This was mainly because he preps the cars for the showroom and doesn't want to have to reprep the cars for what would effectively be just "having a go" - my words not his.

Need to find someone/somewhere that I can test drive one that isn't too far away.

I was going to say especially after your experience with the Alfa that you need to get some time in a VX220/Elise. The VX220 turbo that i had a passenger ride in around Anglesey circuit blew me away coming from my STi. I'm quite familiar with the circuit being my local so knew where i would brake and how fast i could corner and the VX was amazing especially with all the turbo shove as well, best of both worlds really.

The example i had a ride in was modified but not too mental, remap to 260ish bhp i think and some lovely 4pot AP brakes with floating discs, AD048 tyres etc.

Yes you are biased, in fact you're rather blinkered when it comes to your Audi love.. ;)

A TT-S is not going to be as involving and fun as the new Civic Type R.

But a 1/4 mile race, at Santa Pod, FWD vs AWD, what did you expect to happen?

You need to stop focusing on the monthly payment being 'low' - its only 'low' because your deposit is 'high'. It's still £15,000 over 3 years to walk away without the car - which doesn't seem like deal of the decade?

Would you really lose £15k on a one purchased new over 3 years? I suspect not?

As mentioned previously, I'm surprised because all the other deals have been £10k-15k down with payments in the £200pm range.

But no, I wouldn't be the type to walk away from dumping £15k into a car. I'm well aware how the PCP works. Hence I'm intrigued by the low payment. Don't worry I'm not being blinded by the low payment, just surprised given the other deals. :)

Remember the 15k only applies if he hands it back. If he sells/trades it in then the difference between the value and the GFV is in his pocket. We don't know the GFV but a few k of difference wouldn't be unreasonable.

It can be hard to execute because selling a car on PCP for it's true value is tricky, but you are literally paying the actual depreciation plus interest - unless you hand it back.

What's changed on that figure to drop £100pm+ I'm not sure. Tomorrow will tell.

Really? I wouldn't but I guess I'm biased.

I watched this at the Pistonheads Sunday Service.

Where as the TTS was going down the strip against a 458 and not that far off.

The Civic is quicker! Look at terminal speeds 100mph for the Civic and 97mph for the Audi. The Audi won the race due to the better start due to boring haldex AWD, the Civic just spun but once it got going it crossed the quarter going faster. Both cars get a good start the Civic will win, but reality is both cars are also slow, I think Scooby wants something that hits 100mph in far less than 14s and more likely something around 10-12s region. :)

You may be right there, old STi was 12.1 @ 113mph so.... :D

Exactly you won't be satisfied with less power buddy unless you go for something that is very driver focused and no offence the three cars your looking at are not.

To sacrifice power and be happy your gonna have to be going with a Porsche or Lotus I feel. Or get something with a lot of power like a GTR.
