Would it make a difference?

The more powerful the gfx card the higher you can set the in game options, to a point that is your i5 will be a good cpu for gaming and will not hold the likes of a 260X/7850/7890 back.
Maybe not so good with a Titan x

The 710 will be on par with your igpu, maybe worse. You are looking at least £80 new for anything meaningful otherwise you will end up disappointed. Second hand market is def best bet imo.

Can you give me the names of top 3 that I should keep my eye open for on said well known auction site.
The HD7850 2GB as mentioned before is probably the best bet being a reasonably fast card and can be hard for around £50 or there about even at auction site I think, but if you can get HD7950 3GB for under £50 (most unlikely), it would be a much faster card.

I have a friend who got a GTX670 2GB for £65 on the auction site, but he was just lucky I think. However I don't think it's good idea to buy 2nd hand Nvidia card few gens old, as they are not very keen on supporting old gen cards.

How do I know if they're a few gens old? I'm sorry, I have (obviously) no idea when it comes to gfx cards.

Basically any card on Nvidia that's not current gen (900 series) there is a chance of not have the performance and stability that it one had during its peak period back then; AMD cards on thr other hand generally age better and performance improve with driver over time. They also tends to better on the hardware side with more memory and larger bus-size and higher memory bandwidth (for example, 7950/7970 vs GTX670/GTX680).

Apologies for digging up an old topic, but I've now got around £100 to spend on a gfx card.

Are recommendations the same or are they any deals on at the moment? I don't want to end up buying something that's not going to make a difference. Thanks in advance

GTX 680? Shouldn't be more than £110 used.

I would agree with above though, the best bet is an AMD 280X or 7970

Would 'AMD ATI 7970 GPU - Powercolor - Very Fast and Cool Running Card' be the right card?

What would be a fair price to pay? He wants £150.

As a few gents have mentioned I'd look for a 7850. Mainly because a version of that same chip is still used in today's r9 370 meaning it will have better support for longer than if you buy a card with an older generation chip.

If you can find a 2gb 7850 in budget snatch it up.

Too much

If you are going to spend that much get a new R9 380 (It comes with a game as well. It has a 190 watt tdp so a 450 watt psu should be fine)
