Does anybody know if you need the envelope as I have accidentally doodled on the back of the step daughters passport envelope she left lying around and she's annoyed/upset about it. She is handing her application in person at Liverpool tomorrow?

Edit: Just checked this online and nowhere does it say the envelope is actually a requirement. So just wonder if anybody who has completed the "fast track" service (one day premium) can confirm this:

4. What to take to your appointment
You need:

2 identical passport photos
a completed paper application form from a post office
your supporting documents - details are in the booklet that comes with the paper form

It is required.

Also it has to match the serial number printed on the form.

They also taste the glue on the envelope to check its the right vintage.

Why would the envelope be required if you were handing the form and required documents by appointment in person?

The is no serial number on the envelope this is wrong.

Yes you do need the correct envelope.

Passport applications are not scanned by the passport office.
They are scanned by Siemens business services or SBS as we used to call them.

Go in ask for a new form, take out uncompleted forms and replace with completed form and relevant docs.

I would not worry too much if its a scribble, I seen them with many tea and other stains on.

But it does need to be a passport application envelope or Siemens will reject it.

Funny fact all envelopes are x-rayed for security.

Siemens deal with incoming mail security and the scanning of documents.
Then it goes to the passport office for review.

Quick edit. The only time you don't need the envelope is when you having an interview. But as she is handing it in then yes it is most definitely needed.

But isn't her appointment an interview?

Edit: anyway, the doodle is just a couple of phone numbers on the back (of the envelope). Presumably after this she will be hanging around for her passport for about four hours.

If it front counter face to face then envelope goes in bin and application is put in plastic folder after being examined, placed in box marked fast track and scanned that day.

If you paying premium service then it works a little different. It might of changed, but not much from my days in the hell hole.

They still use the same system called PASS. I still know people who work there and the system is the same. Just more restrictions now, as in you cannot look up a MP's or the prime ministers passport for ***** and giggles. :p
