K712 Pro or HD650

The headphone bug is a serious condition. I don't even want to think about how much I've spent in the last 6 years! I'm finally done though and sticking with my LCD-2's for music.

Making gaming PC my priority so need to save as much as possible.

Hi, I just moved from xonar dgx & sennheiser hd 518 to xonar stx & hd 650. I was living under the rock for couple of years:-) Now I see the light and want more if possible. To cut "6 years" journey to find better, if I went straight to LCD-2, do you think xonar stx would be good enough to make the best of them? If not what do you recommend?

The STX has a very decent DAC but it's headphone amp isn't brilliant when compared with the higher end stuff. It's about as good as it gets for gaming but for music there is better out there and end game headphones like the LCD-2 definitely deserve spending the extra on for a good DAC and Amp. I haven't heard the LCD-2 so can't recommend a pairing, so I'll leave that to Ryan, who has heard just about everything and owned most of it at one point or another :D

Your set up is already pretty good

There will be better people to answer this but unless you have big pockets and chucking a lot of money at headphones doesn't even dent your personal spending money your going to hit diminishing returns.

Ryan has even said that anything past HD650 really in truthful isn't worth it anymore (in terms of how much it costs to upgrade).

Disregard if you have good money to spend and can get the best of everything, just thought it was worth mentioning

The LCD-2 while not too hard to drive would probably need something extra, at least something like an 02 or Magni. I would still have the Audeze if their QC was better, really nice sounding headphone though.

If you want that bass texture, low end rumble then the Audioquest Nighthawk is a fav of mine, nice headphone lovely warm sound, quite accurate and so easy to drive. It has better bass extension and articulation than the 650 but the 650, when paired with a good source is a more resolving headphone and has a lovely tone.

The Nighthawks can take a while to sound their best, they have this rubber surround and some other cool stuff in their driver that loosens over time, some of these already are loose but most are not and it takes a little for them to loosen up.

I thought it was BS but when I got my replacement NH from Holland due to a headband issue they sounded like they had a slower decay, less clean but after just shooting 1.3 of music through them leaving them off my head so I can experiment it seems to of really helped.

I'd pick them over the 650 only because I need that low end sub bass, they are close in resolving capabilities on mid range systems, both are warm, detailed headphones. If you really want an LCD-2 then it's on par with the other two but has more of a lively sound, a bit brighter in comparison, slightly inaccurate up top but I'm nitpicking as its a really great headphone.

I'm still fannying about trying to find my perfect headphone. Unfortunately I cannot describe what I dislike about each one as I don't know the terminology. I have so far tried tbe K712 and X1. Next I'll try the X2 and Dt770, however I've never tried a Sen and I see the 650 mentioned a lot.
I found the K712 so comfortable if not a little loose fitting, the X1 was not as comfortable.

Personal sound signature/smoothness preferences. Both are excellent but are focused toward different things.

skip the X2 they sound the same as the X1 once you change the cable. And they have had issues with QC recently.

the DT770 is an OK headphone but you might prefer the DT990 if you are looking at other open backs.

Might be useful to think about what aspect of each you liked and disliked - especially from an acoustical point of view as that will help you single out headphones that will be a closer to match to your sonic preference.

I really liked the k712 today not enough to side step from my 400i

Comfort they were great, sound stage and detail were amazing. Bass was clear and pretty tight. Overall I think they are a cracking headset. I just like the 400i more overall.

I have the HD650 and K702 (bass port modded) and prefer the AKG for gaming - so the K712 should be better again.

Music though, HD650 all day (and night) long :)

+1

I feel the same way.

AKG Q701 for gaming. HD600 for music.

I think OP made the right decision with K712 pros for majority gaming use.

Also they aren't exactly crap for music either. In fact they are really good. Just that sennheisers are better.

They moved production to Slovakia,

Mine are made in Austria which are considered the good ones.

These are great all rounders

yeah Austrian are considered better quality the slovakian K712 seem to suffer from the same issue MRK's K7XX suffered (poor quality solder job on short rubbish cables inside the left cup.) I would assume production has increased dramatically and they haven't improved the QC to suit.

I was expecting a lot more bass from the DT770 actually, was left a bit disappointed but got my money back for them so no harm trying.

I really liked the DT990 Premium(250). I was comparing to the X2 at the time and although the X2 has a notably stronger bass, I felt the bass on the DT990 was not lacking in the slightest, was just a totally different kind of bass that I don't know how to describe (tight maybe). The treble isn't that harsh on games and I rarely listen to music so the renowned treble isn't an issue for me.
The X2 was also comfortable as expected, bass was good but everything sounded kind of muddy? Like the detail wasn't there as with the K712/XX or DT990 and the bass would often drown out the details a bit.

Got my final audition this weekend (honest), DT990 Pro, X2, K7XX. I find the headband on the K7XX hurts my head after a while which is odd as it's basically the same as the K712.
