Noise from car

So a while back my car started making noise. Took it to the garage a few weeks ago and they couldn't find what was causing it. The noise happens only when moving, probably coming from the right front wheel. It sounds like something spinning/tapping and is constant, the faster you dive the quicker the noise gets. I know it's hard to diagnose from this but it's doing my head in.

You could either jack it up and spin the wheel to listen for it yourself, then take the wheel off and narrow it down.

Or just take it to a competent garage

The garage is (hopefully) competent. They deal with Lotus and Mitsubishi.

If they couldnt diagnose something as simple as a rotational noise, they're not competent. Or they're not interested

Good answer, stone or nail in your tyre.

Slightly worse answer, wheel bearing.

Bad answer, driveshaft or shaft bearing.

From your description of 'it sounds like something spinning/tapping' as opposed to just tapping, I'd guess it is a wheel bearing. Does it get louder when you turn one way or the other?

Could be brake related too - spring popped off the pad making it rattle around

I had a similar noise coming from my MINI. Turned out to be a loose bolt in the gearbox :/

It's a constant noise that get quicker as you accelerate, doesn't seem to get louder when you turn, although it has gotten a bit louder on the past few weeks. Another thing I should have mentioned is when I stop it doesn't stop smoothly, it feels like one of the wheels is egg shapped, it's quite subtle but I notice it.

When I took it to the garage they thought it might be the tyre. They swapped both front wheels from another car of the same model and it was still there. They checked all the brake discs etc, they didn't charge me and it was in for a couple of days.

They think it might be a wheel bearing. So annoying they couldn't find it.

It's my missus car, a Chevrolet Aveo 10 plate. A wheel bearing can't be that expensive? What do you reckon it would cost to buy and fit from a garage.

I have had a good few done on my van £70-80 they need pressing out on my van which can be a pain to do, cars are much easier and not all need pressing out. So... It shouldn't be much more than £40-50

It was the wheel bearing. £95 all in. Noise gone.
