Hi Guys,

So I've got quite a few trips planned this year and I've already heavily invested in the Fuji X system for travel photography, so far;

Fuji XT-1
Fuji 35mm f2
Fuji 100-400mm (Ok maybe not ideal for travel but, one of my trips is a Safari)

So thats my current kit and looking at adding a Samyang 12mm f2 soon too.

My first question is.. If you are traveling carry on only and not checking in hold, can you take aboard both a carry on case and camera shoulder bag?

My thinking behind this is that some women do have stupidly large oversized handbags.

Second question is.. What camera bag do you use when travelling abroad and what would you recommend?

Really depends on the airline's carry on rules, the (budget) airlines I normally travel with don't allow two bags.. but have been fairly relaxed with my camera bag

What kind of travelling are you planning?

I'm currently using the Mindshift 26L backpack, it allows me to carry my D810, a 70-200 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, 14-24 f2.8, a couple of prime lenses (apparently I can get my 200-400 f4 in the bag detached)

It also has just enough space to use as a proper daypack, can carry some food, clothes & a 2 litre water bottle & tripod in the side pockets

Depends....

For holiday, no case, no bag, just a 5D3 with a 35L.

But for something serious...

With BA I got this as a carry on. Their limit is 1 case with 23kg, a laptop bag. The camera doesn't count so you can squeeze in another body and lens with flash attached.

I'm pretty sure it's only one bag but sometimes they will let you take on more it depends , I pretty much take a rucksack and that's it to save £50 on baggage cost , I just got a flight to Iceland return to Bristol for £90

I take 2 batteries - canon6D as its light and amazing & 24-70 2.8 & 10-18mm for landscape & 1 x 10 stop ND

D800, 24-70, 702-00mm f/2.8, 300mm f/4.0 PF, 1.4xTC, batteries, polarizer, Gitzo 3531 systematic tripod with really Right Stuff BH-55 head.

Tripod in suitcase, the rest goes in a F-Stop Loka with medium ICU.

Would you happen to know if the Mindshift 26L backpack is a carry on size?

I've had no problems so far (although I've only used it on two airlines.. Easyjet & UIA)

I did check before I bought it and it was below Ryanair, Easyjets etc.. cabin restrictions, just need to be wary of the weight as mine loaded is 11ish kg's

Thank you for the input everyone :)

I've been looking at the F-Stop bags but can't find a dealer in the uk, D.P I don't suppose you picked yours up in the UK and where from?

Also contemplating a Sun-Sniper Steal, what is everyones take on this? I'm just a little weary of Johannesburg.

I currently have a USAGEAR S-17.

Edit: Somehow posted waaaaaaaaaaaaay before was ready.

Anyway, took a lot of searching to come down to this.

On holidays, for me, it's important to try and get the best photos I can of what I see (mostly widlife).

Travel luggage restrictions are generally 5KG for carry on (though I am still unclear if this applies to backpacks as well as the bigger carry on's as they didn't weight my stuff last time).

Anyway, so I needed lightest bag possible to carry as much of my gear as possible, cause I don't want it with all the other cargo getting abused (though my Sigma 150-600mm will have to go in main bag next month for Costa Rica)

So, in the USAGEAR, I can get A7Rii, FE 70-200mm F4, FE 24-240mm, FE 16-35mm, FE 90mm, FE 28mm and FE 55mm, while still fitting in my flash, a6000, and 'all those other bits'.

Though I tend to offload one of the heavier lenses to other half's bag due to weight. It's tough keeping under the 5KG limit! And now I have to decide between 24-70mm and 24-240mm. Also don't tend to take the 16-35mm for wildlife type holidays.

For travel to a city I could happily take FE 16-35mm, FE 24-70mm, and either 28mm or 55mm, and not even worry about a camera backpack.

If I'm travelling carry-on only and need a few changes of clothes, I plonk clothes, toiletries etc in a generic soft rucksack, then load up my camera bag (Tenba DNA13) with camera gear and bits I need on the plane, then put the Tenba in the rucksack. That gets round the (stupid) "one bag" rule, and I just slip the Tenba out once on the plane and stuff the rucksack in the overheads.

If the overheads are jam packed, I can bung the camera round my neck and stuff the rest under the seat.

Also gives a bit of flexibility- if I pick stuff up abroad that I want to bring back, I can bung it all in the rucksack and put it in the hold on the return journey.

Off to Barbados next week, will be taking Peak Design Everyday Messenger bag with a D750, 24-120 f4, 50mm 1.8, batteries, filters, iPad and a few other bits. The bag is an excellent bit of kit.

Thanks guys...

I'm seriously contemplating the Thule Covert DSLR Rolltop Backpack, from the reviews I've read it seems to have the biggest normal day items section at the top but, I don't think the 100-400 will fit in the camera section. The price looks right at £120 too.

D.P I've looked at F-Stops website and everything seems to be out of stock with really long lead times :(

Alternatively paramo in Covent garden sell them. Probably a bit far for someone in Derbyshire though! I think they are the only UK stockist.

Cheers Amp34 and they've got the LOKA UL in stock, London isn't too much of an issue either :)

D.P any chance you can post up a pic please and how much room do you have for other 'stuff' ?
