Ok. On Saturday I will be hosting a Poker game. There will be 6 of us playing with a buy in of £10. It is just a stag do I am having, can't be bothered going out getting hammered or whatever so we are playing poker, eating Doritos, pizza and drinking a bit of beer etc. Generally having a bit of a laugh :) It's a bunch of mates enjoying the evening.

What I am asking you poker guys is, how do I set up the game?

I have two poker sets. My main one has 5 colours, white, red, blue, green and black. 100 of each.

My second set has 50 each of white, red, blue and green.

It is a £10 buy in (no re-buy, if you're out you're out, and will not want to go past 4 hours play time)

What is the best way to distribute chips and what denominations would I give them to the blinds as the game goes on?

hope you understand the question:)

Cash game would be more fun. Tournament poker is boring enough without the risk of going out first hand and having to watch for 4 hours.

Have a smaller buy in and just stop playing after 4 hours instead. Could also add a prize for the one with most chips at the end.

You only need two colours...

Treat all the chips whatever colour as 1, maybe around 70/80 each, blinds up every 15 mins, whoever wins most games takes pot.

Could do the above and have warm up game first then cash game for the pot.

Poker? Ten years ago I was addicted.

I still play against these guys now and again.

One of the best games ever made IMO.

How would I do a cash game. Is that juts basically everyone bringing change and betting with money instead of chips.?

£5 buy in, 5p/10p blinds, unlimited rebuys.

Get some change from your local bank, shouldn't be much trouble I used to do it in my student days.

It makes the game a lot more interesting when every hand is real cash.

No need to do that, just use the numbers on the chips (I assume they have numbers) as pence. Then share the chips out to equal £10 for each player.

Perhaps better option would be £5 buy-in and another £5 re buy for those that fall out early. Stop the game after 4 hours/up the blinds significantly towards the end of the time.

There are no number son the chips but I do have a PDf file with options of adding denominations and colours to the chips whihc I can have displayed along with other inof on my monitor during play. No one is bothered about rebuy. It's only a fun game with a few quid at stake. I can bet most of us wont care after a few beers anyway :p

Just decide chip denominations lowest to highest...

10 20 50 100 200 etc

Have just a few / couple of the big denominations.

Honestly, just start the blinds low (I.e 10) and double them every 20 minutes. In my experience, people can't be arsed to play poker for much longer than 2 hours unless they are super afficianados. By double blinds it starts getting harsh about an hour and a half in, so everyone gets a decent game and it then becomes so aggressive with the blinds it stops the game dragging on. We tend to have a sense check on how people are doing and relax the increases if it's going to leave people knocked out too soon, or vice versa.

cheers nitelfy.. that seems a good way of doing it. I have found a blinds timer app. Might use that. you can specify the duration of each blind.. that will help keep the game on track.

You've got to know when to hold 'em. Know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away, and know when to run. You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table. There'll be time enough for counting when the dealin's done.
