I'm thinking of doing some private work on the side. This next to working 7 days a week, learning python and doing a degree

I suppose I can always turn work down if I don't have time. I'm just wondering how people find work? I'll probably do a website for cheap (wordpress or something), Facebook and maybe Twitter or something. Do a deal on HUKD to raise awareness, and maybe Gumtree.

Any other ideas? I'm a plumber / mechanical engineer / electrician so it shouldn't be too hard to find work, especially now people are starting to prep their houses for summer.

And what can I charge? I was going to go with £50 an hour and £75 on Sundays but no idea really.

We've recently got a tradesman from :-https://www.mybuilder.com/ the other we got by googling plumber our post code. Hope this helps :)

Diddums I am going to give you a call later this evening matey, I have just the thing for you, flexible, work when you want etc, just need to set yourself up as a sole trader and have some public liability insurance in place, and of course a Van

only other request is that any work you do, you need to have the appropriate certs, gas safe/17th edition etc.

reactive maintenance, mainly domestic, with quotable work too, all in the M25, choose your area, we can have a chat and see what you think.

ohh and instant work, and its very busy at the moment.

Sounds good mate, you've got my number :)

We may be off to a film later, depends what she wants. If I don't answer leave me a message and I'll give you a ring later on or tomorrow.

Repeat business and referrals make up a very large percentage of work. The rest is either passive (website, listings etc.) or through good ol' targeted advertising and direct approach.

or an online payment system, that allows you to take payment by card there and then, no excuses with the 'cant get to cash machine/only £300 limit etc'

Good food for thought. How would you guys go about getting paid then? What's to say I've actually done the work? Do you get them to sign something before you start?

Probably not much help for you, but on the flip side as a customer, if a guy sent out to do a job by his business does a good job, i will often ask if he does cash jobs (and always pay cash on completion).
Having said that. the jobs i have asked to be done are able to be done in a day such as aircon fitting etc. Never tried a large project such as renovations as a cashy.

Go on fivver and put ur fivver

Going by your post history and join date, it would appear that you are just posting any old nonsense in the hope to get MM access. I will say that you're going to have to actually post something vaguely relevant to actually get them to count, as the mods will simply see you as a spammer and reset your post count.

I can agree with the getting paid bit... I tend not to do any work unless the customer can prove that they can pay.

This tends to be more of a problem for work that comes in via classified or other ads if its word of mouth they tend to be similar people with similar incomes and similar standards when it coming to paying. Random work from ads tends to attract chancers more.
