Home poker tournament - advice needed.

I think you definitely have, the above makes no sense and would lead to arbitrary increases in the value of people's stacks. Kind of defeats the point of increasing the blinds if you also increase the value of stacks albeit in a very random and unfair manner based purely on the colour of chips people happen to have

you colour up by, for example, taking the white chips completely out of play by exchanging them for higher value chips

Say I've got 20 white chips well that is worth 500 - so I could put my 20 white chips back in the box and replace them with a single blue chip or five red chips

That last bit you wrote is what I was probably meaning. As I read it on a webiste a bit ago , to me it seemed you give the chips higher value as the blinds went on. Cheers for clearing that up for me.

So once we are lets say half way into the game, the white 25s are pretty much worthless so I could exchange them for more blues but still have the same amount of chips (total value) on table. yes?

I didn't say that, I just pointed out that white chips are pointless in that structure after the first three levels

of course you can exchange chips at any time really to keep stacks manageable, tis a friendly home game after all

then again maybe if someone knocks out a bunch of people early on they'd want to gloat with their big stack of chips :D

i play poker tournies (at home) regularly and it looks like nobody so far has given anywhere near a right answer IMO.

£10 buy in means £10 worth of chips. simple as that really

colour 1 = 25p
colour 2 = 50p
colour 3 = £1

give out 4 of colour 1 = £1
4 of colour 2 = £2
meaning 7 of colour 3 to everyone

blinds would be 25p and 50p. once a couple are knocked out you chip up. so you get rid of the 25p chips for 50p or £1 chips. raise the blinds to 50p and £1.

if someone has a lot of £1 chips you introduce colour 4 whose value is £5 and they can chip up for that.

or you could have £20 buy in which is a lot better IMO. it means it's worth playing properly for. a £10 game I wouldn't care and do stupid bluffs.

with a £20 buy in you could have

colour 1 = 10p
colour 2 = 25p
colour 3 = 50p
colour 4 = £1
colour 5 = £5

5 x colour 1 = 50p
8 x colour 2 = £2
5 x colour 3 = £2.50
10 x colour 4 = £10
1 x colour 5 = £5

total £20

blinds would be 10 and 25p to get the ball rolling.

after either you go round the table once, or someone gets knocked out or an hour passes blinds raise to 25p and 50p.

then after more time to 50p and £1.

then after more time to £1 and £2 until the death.

this way anyone can "cash out at any time".

using stupid denominations nobody can cash out. you also cannot really tell who is winning and by how much accurately with a quick glance.

e.g. £20 buy in £20 worth of chips. after 2 hours I have £60. I decide to cash out because I'm getting too drunk to play.

I can remove all my chips from play and take my £60 and walk.

Any other system you will need a calculator and paper to work out cash outs, etc.

eh?

the above is a bit ironic as you've started by mentioning tounies but then just described a cash game but where the blinds increase? Seriously? Why increase the blinds in a cash game?

nobody likes someone who never plays a hand until they have an unbeatable hand.

basically keep the blinds low. person bleeds slowly then wins big keeping them afloat or in the green.

blinds go up and you bleed fast meaning you have to take risks rather than play safe all night.

blinds have to go up otherwise games could last years if you have safe players.

We tend to play with 3k chips each, no buy in's, blinds double every 20 mins on a mobile phone timer.

Works well for 4 to 6 people, depending on how much the pay in is, either winner takes all or split 60/40 between 1st and 2nd place.

Generally £5 or £10 to play, keeps it casual and friendly, cheap social night in!

but you're talking about a cash game with a fixed buy in that people can leave at any time and yet you want to increase the blinds to force them to play?

anyway the OP is trying to organise a tournament not a cash game, you posted that 'nobody so far has given anywhere near a right answer IMO.' Rotty has already given an answer and his answer described a tournament not some strange cash game format with increasing blinds

I'd say £20 is also a very cheap night.

A single round at a bar can easily be 2-3 times that.

Usually nobody cashes out though until towards the end.

Basically if someone won 2 hands within 5 mins of starting, doubled their money and then cashed out. They wouldn't be asked to play again. In fact that would cause a guaranteed riot, the majority would refuse to play after that and cash out on principle. It would ruin the game.

Cashing out comes into play when the game is getting on and people are fed up, need to go home because it's 2am, etc. It basically comes into play when people are fed up. Not because they are happy to take home a fiver more than what they had.

Our games last usually between 3-6 hours.

OK but you do seem to be missing some fundamental concepts about how a tournaments work... individuals leaving part way through completely changes the structure of the game and chips don't directly correspond to cash - read this if you want to understand why:

simple example:
http://www.cardplayer.com/poker-news/18226-explain-poker-like-i-m-five-independent-chip-model-icm

example with maths:
http://www.pokerhelper.com/independent-chip-modeling/

you've described a cash game with increasing blinds and some sort of unwritten agreement that people can't cash out 'too soon'

I mean if you did want to run an actual tournament and it frequently overran then change the structure to increase blinds more frequently and in greater size... if by some fluke you still end up running over and this is an issue then you could have some pre-set time limit whereby you stop the game and everyone left is allocated winnings via ICM.

Ok I think I have sorted the game structure out. if these seems rubbish please tell me and offer more advice.:)

[snip 2x images]

I have been reading up on it and taken advice from you guys but I am still unsure what quantity of chips to give each player. I am looking for no more than 4 hours play as per Blinds Schedule above. If I dish out 1000 each player, to me it does not seem enough, it is my first time hosting a game by the way.:p
[snip text + image]

Now regarding the chip value, do I keep these the same through all levels till the end or would you suggest to increase them, say, every 4th level. Eg:

L 1-3 White 25 Red 100 as per poster above
L 4-6 White 100 Red 500
L 7-9 White 300 Red ??? etc

So how many chips and what are they worth?
Do I increase the chip value as the blinds increase in a set amount of levels?
Over to you guys:D

I love playing poker and sometimes make home tournaments, 6-seats, no buy-in, just sports play (personal quirk of mine) tho.

Levels: I'd recommend adding one level of 800/1600, I really doubt you'll need 2k/4k level by that time. From level 5 you might want to add antes, 10% of BB (so for 300bb 25 ante, 600bb 50 ante and so on). When you're done with Level 8 just do a colour up 25 -> 100 and you're golden.

20k/person should be enough for one play, might last you whole 4 hours, depending how aggressive you guys are, Rotty's chip suggestion is the most widely used I believe.

Just in case:

ante - a small sum you pay into pot just by being at the table, means people are not waiting for blinds to bleed, but they're bleeding every hand they are still in the game.

colour up - changing smallest valued chips for next in value, 25 -> 100, 100 -> 500. 25->100 goes like this:
1. Change 25s for every person who has enough 25s for even hundreds, if someone has 9x 25, give him 2x 100 and leave him 1x 25.
2. Shuffle the deck. Put leftover 25s in front of players.
3. From top of the deck, deal open faced cards for players clockwise, starting from UTG (dealer gets dealt last).
4. Going by the values, change 25s for 100s. If values are same, Spades are the highest, then Hearts, Clubs and last are Diamonds.
5. (to make 4. clear: No1 has 1x 25 , No2 has 3x 25s, rest have none left. No1 gets dealt Ace, No2 gets dealt a 10 6 and King. No1 gets the 100 for his single 25 while No2 gets nothing and loses his 25s.)

Sounded difficult until I've seen it in person and tried it myself. Easy.
Since you're 6 players, you can split the prize 40/20 for 1st and 2nd places too.

Oh, and I suggest at least one break, around halfway through.

Last nights Poker game update.

After chatting to all my mates including one who has never played before we decided to go with a fairly straight forward game of cash cash values on the chips. We stared around 8pm after everyone had a few beers and caught up with gossip etc, bit like a bunch of ladies. ha :p

£10 buy in no blinds but all agreed on starting off each hand with the small 10p Whites and raised as needed with whatever they wanted. Keeping bets for the first hour low with 10p, 25p and 50p chips.

As the game went on we coloured up, removing the white (10p) and red (25p) thus making it a little more fun. By 11pm we had 2 players out who had a Slither.io tournament :D

by that time pretty much everyone was smashed, after all it was BYOB, but still able to make out what cards where what.. At 12:30 two lads (who were out anyway) had to go as they were at work at 6am. God bless them. They enjoyed it very much.

It got to 2am and there was myself and two others left. As we ran out of booze and I was pretty much falling asleep at the table :p we all decided to call it a night and we split the cash 3 ways, £20 each. I am pretty sure we all agreed on doing it again soon but with bigger buy in and a re-buy plus a proper blinds schedule and less alcohol. A few sore heads and "need to adjust my lifestyle after last nigh" posts on facebook :D

Once I get to chat to the guys again and if we are willing to do it once per month maybe I may consider either making a nice table top to sit on my dining table or buy a pre-made one, just to get that real big game feel. Might even invest in a bunch of nice chips and cards as the ones in my poker set seemed quite sticky, they didn't slide against each other very well. Something to look into.

Anyway, thanks for all your advice in this thread. It made the preparation less daunting and actually made for a very good night.

Any tips on what sort of table top/cloth/chips/cards etc I should have a look into?

my mate has something similar tho this

http://www.timepiecesdirect.co.uk/howard-miller-699-013-niagara-game-table-1024-p.asp

which was custom made in USA and shipped over by the original owner. he then sold it on gumtree for pennies. think he paid like £300 for a table worth £1500+. came with 4 wheely chairs with reclining backs too. i wish i had seen it tbh. would have bit the guys arm off.

however you probably want this

https://www.aosom.co.uk/homcom-200c...0ZMSKlbkHkYefxFy964YYdVZLuRBIxyxu0hoCMeLw_wcB

plenty of poker table tops/felts you can buy on the net

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/2815...1=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=122&ff19=0

is only £23

That gaming table in second link is very nice but a little out of my price range.. :)

Those folding tables look good but how sturdy are they? Do you know. I can just envision someone resting their elbows on it and the thing tipping up haha

I've not used those before but I'd assume that if rested on a fairly solid dining room table then those folding table top things should be OK.

You could always perhaps consider building your own as a little project - there are a few guides available online from people who have done that.

I have been chatting to my mates about another game. I am getting it organised for a summer afternoon / evening, BBQ and music etc.

£100 buy-in. WTA. 10 players signed up so far. £1000 to the winner (as it stands), could make for a good night or very messy night. The main thing is we are all good mates. no one will bat an eye lid scoffing 100 notes as we have plenty of notice. I shall endeavour to remember to record the game, or at least the final few players. Should be fun.

Everyone agreed on a £5 entrance fee, to cover the BBQ food basically. BYOB. Wives/partners and children are coming to help out with feeding us all too. Gonna be a good day.
