I've decided to opt for a self tied bow tie at my first black tie event. Any idea where the best places are to buy one? Tieroom sell them, and so do Dobell and other retailers. Do you guys prefer silk, wool, cotton, or satin material?

Don't get one from Debenhams. I bought an adjustable one there last year but even on the longest length setting, it was still too short for my 15.5" neck. I ended up with a pre-tied one because I needed it quickly and couldn't find one locally.

oh i'm subscribing to this one...

Forums are for asking questions, sorry to hear that wanting to know of good quality neckties is amusing for you.

That sucks. Will stay away. 15.5" isn't even large to be honest.

I was curious why you didn't buy one whilst your bought the jacket and trousers. Please don't say you are hiring one that is so common. The bow tie fabrication is obviously a choice depending on the material of the suit. But seeing this is your first time I will allow this transgression. More information is required before a serious suggestion applicable.

Mohair and pure wool blend dinner jacket and trousers from TM Lewin, Marcella bib wing collar dress shirt from Charles Tyrwhitt, silk cummerbund, shirt studs and pre tied silk bow tie from Dobell. It looks pretty good as is, having just a good pocket square left to purchase and some patent shoes, I think I've done pretty well on the cheap and on my first time. I bought the pre tie in case I couldn't source a self tie / learn to tie it fast enough. I would never hire a suit. Suits are investments and could easily be re worn, just no point in hiring as I lose out both financially and lose out on a proper fit too.

Just tie your own. It takes a few minutes to work out how to do it if you load up a Youtube video and give it a go. They're nicer than clip on (which I assume you're referring to, rather than a go go gadget bow tie which ties itself).

Thanks. My question is, where can I get the best self tie bow tie, the type which you tie your self, as in "self-tie", just like my thread title and subsequent posts.

I just got told by the bride that for the wedding next week I can't wear a black bow tie and it needs to be colourful...so now I need to buy one.

This thread is of interest to me. I have nothing particularly useful to add though :p

Tieroom has a lot of colourful bow ties. You should try that :)

I think you should chose something colour and textile matchable in silk from Dobell if you are not considering changing the cummerbund too.
Are you currently residing in the United States of America or on Continental Europe ?
As where does the best self tie, I will ask my butler later where he sources his clothing.

Ah nice, thanks! Seem to be a couple which would work and aren't too expensive. Given that this is more than likely a one time thing, don't want to spend too much. Have a black bow tie which hasn't been worn in years (bride has been clear that the black bow tie is a no no :p)

Not sure if it's helpful, but given that normal ties tend to be silk, I would've thought a bow tie would be the same, so would go for silk personally...
