Unlikely. I'd put a new belt on it to be safe, and a battery and I bet it would not only run but run absolutely fine. Get it warmed up then do an oil change, I highly doubt it would need anything like a full strip down and rebuild.
I hauled an RS Turbo out of a chicken shed a couple of months ago, it had been there since 1999. Fired up with a small puff of smoke on the first crank with a new battery, spluttered on 3 cylinders for about 30 seconds and was absolutely fine after that. Engines are generally not as fragile as people seem to think they are.
I have done this loads of times with cars that have been laid up for all sorts of long periods.
Hmm, I wonder if you've dropped lucky tbh, the issues we've had at work with trucks that have been laid up for a few months when work drops off is surprising, they don't like periods of inactivity and I'm taking here if commercial vehicles that are designed to take abuse, recalling the issues I had with my old RST which was never laid up makes me think your indeed charmed, I really can't see how the Op is going to achieve any more than scrap value for his VW with it laying idle for so long, I don't see it as a viable proposition for whoever takes it on, tbh I don't think it's "special" enough to be worthwhile.
I sincerely hope I'm wrong though, it's always good to see old cars get a new lease of life.
