Well that would have upset me if I had taken part.

Mind you the second Marathon I did in 2000, I'd ran for 15 miles and stopped at St John for treatment on my blisters. They were that bad they told me to get on the bus that would be coming and it would take me back to Trentham Gardens. I said I'm here to do the run and get my medal but they said I would still get my medal  I carried on and finished it.
Since then I've heard so many tales of people who gave up, caught the injury bus, got out a few hundred yards from the finish and collected their medals.
I had a right argument with one female workmate where she was adamant her husband deserved his medal even though he'd only done 16 miles.

I'd take the bus then walk across the line at the end, grab my medal and shove it on ebay. Jobs a goodun. Some bloke died I heard, a former soldier. Fancy that. Fighting the Taliban and then you get scuppered by a long run in the sun. Life is tricky.

Not at the Greater Manchester one he didn't.

Marathon courses are measured out using a bicycle fitted with a counter to calculate distance by the turning of the wheels.

If it requires both wheels on the ground at all times I hope person riding the bike doesn't do wheelies. :D

23 other people have voted on B but no suggestions :(

Should all the runners be contacted and give their medals back?

Yes
No

I got a poll today without even asking. It's all in the finesse dear sir.

(And drugging mods, but that's a story for another day).

When I did the Berlin marathon you got a "commemorative wristband" as part of the entry pack. If you finished the race you could pop down to the Adidas store and get your finishing time laser-engraved on it. Much more personal, and better than a medal in my opinion, they've always gone straight into a drawer.

If I'd run a marathon and discovered afterwards that it was almost half a K short I'd be pretty peeved. I'm surprised it took 3 years to notice, I thought all the people with GPS watches would have been moaning (I know they're not perfectly accurate, but 380m is a fair bit!).

This was my first thought, after the finish everybody would be tapping their GPS devices to see if they were working and then you'd be uploading to Strava or MapMyRun with a short distance.
