So the place I use for tyres, which have always been miles (ahaha car puns) cheaper than anywhere else, even online.

A friend today who was also told their tyre wasn't repairable went to a different place, lo and behold, they could repair it...

Fortunately I took my tyre away with me after getting the replacement done... so heres some pics.

Any thoughts on if this is a repairable job?

If you open it up as far as you can, you can just about make out the edge of a cord, but the cord is intact. The puncture most definitely doesn't go all the way through.

That tyre looks finished to me.

Also, when it comes to tyres, if in doubt replace it. I've seen a car lose control when a tyre burst and it#s not a pretty sight, let alone to be a participant.

Thanks guys, its not really a matter of it being good to use or not, given the speeds my car is capable of I would have replaced it anyway, the main point is to see if that place is doing people over recommending new tyres when it may not be needed.

FWIW heres the tread and the cut.

And heres the flap pulled back...

that white dot in the middle I think is the edge of the cord.

Quoted for reading.

That simply isn't safely repairable, and I'd avoid any tyre shop that tells you it is. When you have a puncture on the treaded area close to the shoulder it starts becoming questionable, but with a bloody great big hole in the middle of the sidewall there is no question at all. Go back to the first guy and get a new tyre.

I'd be more concerned about the garage that is repairing tyres like this!

A blow out on the motorway at 70mph caused by a dodgy repair does not bear thinking about.

Side wall is automatic replacement in my books. I wouldn't chance it. Would you rather spend a bit on new boots or risk totalling your car in a blowout at high speed?
