Just... just SUPPOSE... that I had a "friend" who had a bbq last year, but it started raining after it was done, so the BBQ got left out in the rain, then got put in the shed... still covered in grease etc.
Just suppose that this "friend" had looked in the shed for the first time this year and found said BBQ...

And gone "eurgh!"

What would be the best way of getting it clean? It's bigger than the sink, and any buckets I own, so immersing it to soak in anything is going to be difficult at the very least - bath is not an option.

I'd avoid wire wool it might scracth the enamel on the grill making it suseptible to rust.

Oven cleaner bags are a product version of the sodium hydroxide solution. Anything that caustic will clean it.

I've done this before and I bought some Cilit Bang oven cleaner stuff and just sprayed in on and left it for 20 minutes or so. Wiped it off with paper towel and then give it a second going over. I then filled the grill full of coles and just shut the lid and gave the grill a good scrub with a BBQ wire brush tool and the grill came up almost like new again.

To clarify - I'm mostly interested in cleaning the metal part, the food sits on. Rack? I think it's just stainless steel.

Last time a 'friend' did this I...I mean he just threw it in the skip and bought a new one.

Fire it up and maybe scrub it with a metal scourer once hot.

This for sure - tinfoil works well too if not too bad. Leave lid on for a bit as well to really burn off as much as possible before scrubbing.

I also use 1/2 a lemon on a bbq fork once cleaned to sterilise grille and then run a piece of kitchen paper with a bit of ground nut oil along grille with bbq tongs.

My "friend" had this issue too, funny how we all have silly friends. Anyway, he got his wife to clean it with wire wool and oven cleaner. It was much work but came good in the end.

Top tip after doing it, take some cooking oil and smear it all over the inside of the BBQ then burn some coals. It should burn off any excess oils etc.

Grille.
The grille of a grill is what you cook the food on. The rack of a grill is where you put the cooked food to keep it warm while your guests faff about instead of coming to get their stuff. :p

I get shouted at by the purists for 'cleaning' my grilles. They're all the types who burn the gunk off and wipe it down with half an onion, similar school of thought to seasoning a wok instead of scrubbing it clean, I guess... good excuse to be lazy about it, I s'pose!! :D

This, the Lemon also acts as an anti stick agent to stop the meat from sticking to the grill.
