Boaty McBoatface

Can't really complain at the name, though I was quite fond of Boaty McBoatface.

Lesson learned - don't ask the general public to name your 200m quid assets!

They got some publicity but as Bunka said on the last page it's such a missed opportunity.

While obviously Boaty McBoatface would have been a stupid name and perhaps even seem to demean the project it's set for, they could have made it a sub-title or unofficial name or something and turn it into a project in an attempt to get kids interested in science. I really hate the stiff-upper lip political stance on matters like this. All to save a bit of face (pun not intended).

Still, I've got no complaints about them ultimately naming it after a legend.

Surely Henry Worsley would have been more appropriate than Attenborough, had more votes too.

Yes, but I'm willing to bet that they wanted something that people would feel uncomfortable attacking when the poll winner was disregarded. Not many people know how Henry Worsley is. But with David Attenborough, they're hoping people will go "oh well, he deserves it" rather than being angry their votes were ignored.

I love how they asked the public, then when they didn't like what the public said they decided to go with their own choice regardless.

Remind you of anything similar?

the government? they give the public the chance to decide on something sensible, but then the average voter shows their complete lack of knowledge in the area so the government are forced to do it any way.

"one of the remotely operated sub-sea vehicles will be named Boaty in recognition of the vote."

The well know school campaign to have the stupid name was the only reason it ever surfaced. My daughter was told in assembly to vote Boat by some idiot teacher.

I thought it a good outcome - you'll always get some silly trolled suggestions on a publuc vote like that and atleast they've given a token recognition to the poll with the sub name.

Giving the boat that actual name while amusing would be a bit silly.
