Had a marketing email and wondered what you guys thought of this article?

Here

Personally I love a good Bank Holiday, but I have always been a worker and never been in management or owned a company so I guess it could be a bit of a pita. Especially on the May and August BH's where the inevitable "I had some bad meat at a BBQ and cant come in to work" phone calls on the Tuesday morning will probably get very old.

So what does GD think?

That is clearly written by someone who doesn't understand people or how they work. People need time off an having days where everyone gets it off at the same time has a huge amount of intangible value to society.

It wouldn't actually affect the people on the statutory minimum holiday entitlement of 28 days, as Bank Holidays will be included in that.

For the rest of us that's 8 days holiday less!!

We work to live not live to work so no i don't agree with changing things just to cause less inconvenience to HR departments, that what they're paid to do.

yup we should ditch them - inevitably people want to use them to take an extended break and others have to be disappointing... instead of having a mandated holiday on several set days it would be much better to have mostly normal holidays with flexibility - Bank Holidays date back to days before we had so much paid leave

you could probably throw in exceptions like New Years and Christmas + Easter but then again people who aren't Christian or from a Christian background might prefer to have days off for other religious festivals

What happens if you did have some bad meat at a BBQ over said bank holiday  There are always people take the mick and then there are people who have terrible friends who try to food poison them to make them look bad at work :D

Theres actually no requirement for businesses to pay staff for being off on a Bank Holiday (unless it's included in the statutory minimum Holiday pay), it's just done by tradition really. So stop paying people for them and they will soon drop in popularity :p

In our company we lost bank holidays as automatic days off but gained the extra days as annual leave allowance to make up for it. I personally prefer having the option to take extra days when I want rather than at set times.

I prefer having bank hols. The UK seems to slip into a positive mood when everyone has the day off together or we are on for a 3 day weekend. They are also important for pushing the sales of many goods in certain industries.

Many retailers will centre promotions around these holidays because there is a killing to be made and it helps to shift certain kind of stock at a rate only seen around Christmas.

Not fussed really, I'd rather keep them so we can continue to hear everyone moan about the weather being rubbish on them. Classic banter all round.

I may be mistaken here, but doesn't that already happen 2 days out of every 7?

Generally this is the case but I suspect there are some couples who work alternating weekends and such, who might benefit from that.

Saying that, the type of work that involves working weekends probably involve working bank holidays too.

Calling us 'Brits' just shows he doesn't understand what these days mean to many people in this country.

What a load of bull and he's just trying to sell software. :p

My company recently stopped bank holiday payments. We used to get double time and a day off in liue. Now we are paid normal time but given the day as holiday. We have to work three a year however and my contract is worded like they can basically change my hours to suit.
