German shepherd pinned my collie to the floor

It is a real shame that people who own dogs don't properly train them. I do think that ownership of dogs should be far more formal, and people should be legally compelled to train them through an approved/licensed/qualified/etc trainer.

Its interesting that a lot of people don't realise the personal responsibility they hold when owning a dog. If you haven't got reasonable proof that you've made efforts to have a well trained dog, you can end up being personally responsible even if it is a freak incident. Dogs, as much as we love them are animals and unpredictable.

I know I'd be devastated if my dogs did anything out of character, but I'm not an idiot and I recognise it could happen.

I say that as the owner of two dogs, both of which have been through significant training, and not just attending a couple of puppy lessons to learn how to sit/walk to heel/etc....

How do you know it's the owners fault? If kicking the dog releases it's grip then I'm all for it. I'll leave you to attack the owner while your dog is still being mauled.

It's always the owners fault if they have not properly socialised their dog. Kicking the dog does nothing, they aren't complex creatures mentally, they have no hidden agenda and don't think 'oh I'm going to attack that border collie cos i hate border collies'. I only recommend kicking the owner if they have not spurred into action.

Tell that to my old dog who was clearly racist :(. I miss him but he was a pain in the arse :(.

Actually I guess that could be a socialisation issue. Maybe the owners previous were BNP .

Count your lucky stars it was your dog and not you. :p

On a serious note, a very hard punch on the nose can take most dogs off attack mode.

because the result of them flipping out it much more severe
Hmmmm nope, can't see how you came to that conslusion.
Official figures say that worker dogs are the #1 type for attacks, Collies, labradors, huskies, german shepards, etc, they get very bored and anxious very easily.
And Staffy bull terriers are the #1 dog NOT to attack anyone or any thing.

erm yes and you're arguing a different point, I've already backed up the post I made earlier in the thread with evidence

Should have kicked it harder OP, steel toe caps can help.

He should have gone old school and sent his daughter to the owner's house to kick his dog and then recorded the phone conversation when the owner phoned him to complain.

It was either that or try to think of some way of killing his dog, despite the fact, out of desperation,I had kicked it twice. :(
It may be prudent to invest in some pepper spray, there are brands especially designed to repel dogs; if you don't have any and the situation is desperate then jam your thumb in its eye as hard as you can until the eyeball bursts, this should cause the dog to release its grip.
