New to PC building, with the 1080 confirmed for May 27th...

The NVIDIA statement is:
''The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 "Founders Edition" will be available on May 27 for $699. It will be available from ASUS, Colorful, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision 3D, MSI, NVIDIA. Palit, PNY and Zotac. Custom boards from partners will vary by region and pricing is expected to start at $599''

That is ambiguous as to the timing of the 'custom boards' but it reads like they will be available from the outset.

Fingers crossed, looking to get one on release!

i think pascal was rushed for early than excpected release, custom might take longer than usual, probably late Q3 early Q4

I really don't think so. Sure, some custom models will come out some way down the line, but I think a good number of custom boards will not take long to be available.
Why would they make the big launch now if almost nobody could get their hands on one for months?

I think Pascal is behind and the only reason we're getting these cards soon is that Jen is an alien from the future and has time travelled some from a 6 months from now back to now. That's why he had the leather jacket on during the recent presentation - his body was still recovering from the time travelling process. It can be quite servere you know...

So much for the RRP $599, when they are essentially charging a $100 extra "Nvidia early adopters tax" :D Hope everyone that's planning on getting the 1080 at launch has around £650 ready.

I'll be honest about not liking the pricing one bit, but I have to acknowledge that the people behind the pricing and marketing strategy for Nvidia are pure genius from business point of view- not just with this latest attempt of trying to convince the users it is a "status symbol" to spend the $100 extra to get the card "early" (which in reality just mean they are getting the card no earlier nor later than the launch day), but also with how they craftily relabeled what was 60/60Ti and 70/80 cards to now the 70/80 and 80Ti and sell at higher price points.

Not sure why people still banging on about early adopter tax. Both types supposed to be available just that reference have a higher price, the non fe gives board suppliers flexibility on non fe pricing. Fe will likely maintain the higher price going forward.that's how im reading it anyway but not going to claim im right. As I prefer reference cards I don't mind.
Mind you, usually a premium to pay for anything new to market

AIB custom cards are coming in June so you don't have to spend thr silly founders edition price unless you absolutely can't wait a few weeks.

To steal a lead on AMD by any chance?

This also allows the reference (Founders) model to be drip fed at higher prices. The founders model is going to be sold directly from Nvidia and it is said that they will continue to sell it directly for most of the lifespan of the 1080.

Also to get the info out there and build up the hype machine to combat the AMD announcements.

Funnily enough AMD has a press event scheduled for around the time of Pascals release date - That is far from a coincidence and is what competing companies do.

This I think is why people are starting to draw comparisons with Apple and their sales techniques. They are basically testing the market to see how many of their customers are willing to go and pay an extra premium for the early product....which makes you think that they may have brought the release forward (Not necessarily rushed it) to get in before AMD.

With the higher price, they then get less orders which helps as the cards will not be up to full production yields....it's an educated gamble which Nvidia are usually very good at.
;)

Not sure if this is right. All the AIB's have box shots out of the reference model. Theyve said the reference model will be available for the life of the product, but its not clear if nvidia are going to be selling them directly, as all the AIB's have the same design available.
