New Philippines president...

I knew there would be a section of this forum that liked his policies ;)

Yet most of these people are speaking in the comfort of a modern democratic society and wouldn't set foot near the borders of these countries they are so vocal about.

I would love them see them embrace it all and up sticks and move there.

I dont like it. Its very easy to support a guy tough on crime when you have no connection to the country and are just thinking 'this will make crime go down' but his policies will call for very harsh punishments for people who have committed minor crimes (which is not uncommon in a poverty stricken country) and people who in this country would not be considered real criminals like addicts. All it will do is push major crime more underground and to the people who are essentially untouchable.

Can the west somehow go in there and take this mental lunatic out??

Ohhh sorry forgot, no oil to be fought over there.

Nope but it is a nice US ally considering its position. If the guy fails to play ball with the US, we will see his portrayal go from a politician dealing hard justice to an insane lunatic.

It is very easy to speak out on another countries politics from the comfort of a society which is much easier to live in, people seem to assume they know better because they have been dealt a better hand than everyone else.

The guy is mental. I will be very interested to see if he cleans up the government and organised crime like he says he will. My wife is Filipino and a lot of her friends and family voted for this guy; I think he is too extreme but maybe that's what they need to get the job done. A 6 year term really isn't long enough though, and that's all a president is allowed in office.

Absolutely and I would be the first to admit I am guilty of the same too.

I feel quite passionately what happens in the Philippines as it is my fathers home country and i still have a lot of family there. I remember the first time i went there and hearing everyone in the street greet my grandmother and calling her mother. I wondered why everyone seemed to know her and why everyone called her mother and not just my dad. When i was a little older, i learnt it was common curtsey as we were a political family and she had received a lot of good press for treating people and doing what she could to help.

It seems politicians over there go one of two ways to gain popularity: insanely hard on criminals or acts of extreme compassion (like Manny Pacquaio).

He sounds crazy but I like him :D

I have quite a few Filipino friends, I will see what they think when I talk to them.

Hoping to visit next year.

Good luck to him, hopes he achieves what he's set out to achieve. Besides, anyone who rustles the jimmies of the wishy-washy liberal brigade is fine by me.

Definitely a bit mental:

He has got to be :)

I started reading the article and at first thought fair enough, cracking down is good, then as you read more it is like some violent, crazy corrupt B movie with Danny Trejo playing the lead role :D

Why would anyone think he is not as corrupt or more than any other politician?

He is definitely not what the Philippines need at the moment.

Who are we to say what the Philippines need or don't need? They voted him in didn't they?

So they obviously do think that this guy and his policies are what they need. Shirley.

Well he seems to have stuck to his promise:

"It comes as the country's police revealed they were responsible for the deaths of nearly 600 drug suspects since the start of July.

Local media reports suggest the true number could be well over 1,000, when killings apparently carried out by vigilante gangs are taken into account."

With vigilante justice for good measure.

Isn't this the same guy who recently announced that he had the names of all of the corrupt judges and officials and if they didn't hand them selves in he'd come looking for them.
