Buying a second hand diesel is a nightmare. Not only do you need to worry about if the turbo is in good condition, but also the DMF and the DPF.

I'm looking for a cheap (£2k) reliable automatic diesel to keep me going until December. This seems to be impossible for a diesel, yet possible for a petrol.

I'm looking at VW group 1.9 PD coupled with either an early DSG or older CVT.

I don't care about mileage. I know a car with the spec I want will have 100k+ miles on it.

What I do care about is not being stranded on the M56 on a Monday morning on the way to work.

I think they became standard fitment 2007/2008 - for a couple of years prior to that they were available as an option (although without seeing the factory options code sticker I'm not sure how you can identify - V5 or VED online checker may identify e.g. with Euro V emissions or lower VED rate?)

At the 2k end of the scale you're pretty safe from one modern enough to have a dpf. My 2008 jetta doesn't have one but it does have a rattly very noisy dmf!

I doubt many of the older 1.9s will have a DPF.

Or DSG for that matter. At least he wont have to worry about DMF's at all either, since he's wanting an auto. So actually the thread title is only relevant for second hand diesels.

DPF's started creeping in with the 170 BHP 2.0 TDI around 2006, so at your budget, you pretty much have no hope of getting a good one at least.

B5.5 Passat. You should be able to get a good one for £2k, and probably even with quite low miles. When I was looking at Passats about 6 months ago, even at £3k, the B6's were mostly a bit ropey.

Spend £2k getting a GOOD B5.5 Passat, and you shouldn't loose too much coin between now and December. Alternatively, you could look at Seat Leon's, Skoda Octavia's and other Golf sized motors. If you find youself stretching into mk5 platform cars, then you've gone too far. You'll be at the bottom end of that market, and so will end up with more chance of buying a complete nail. Just ask Acme about that end end of the market.

I thought DMF are standard with diesel automatics? Are they just exclusive to DSG gearboxes?

DMF's are for manual gearboxes. The DSG gearbox, however, does also utilise the DMF as part of its make up. The auto's you're likely to get with your budget are more likely to be torque converter affairs, and dont have "gears" as such (at least that is my understanding of how they work).

If not a Passat pd130 auto, then look at Skoda Superbs with the pd130 engines.

He only passatt with DPFs in this generation will have the 2.0 lump.

You forgot the EGR valve from your list, diesels tend to clog it up, so either needs replacing or cleaning. : )

200k, DSG and no service history, i couldn't run fast enough.

As said above buy a B5.5, they are very very well built, engine aside by petrol B5.5 was bombproof.

I cant see much wrong with it as the DMF in the DSG is a different type apparently, I haven't heard of many DSG DMF failures. It will be immediately obvious if it has gone...

A well maintained DSG will go just as long as manuals. Its the 7 speed DSG which gives more problems as its clutches are dry. But then buying any car with 200k on it is like playing the lottery :D.

So this is the kind of thing to stay away from then, since it's a DSG, which has a DMF, and has a DPF?

I'm aware it has no service history. I'm using it as an example.

That car actually have 247k on it (looking at the pics).

I don't understand how a car like that, which has been kept in the family since new, wouldn't have any service history. Sure, people can service cars themselves, but you would keep the receipts surely? And you would have to keep service records for the 3 year warranty at least? And did they service the DSG box? It needs an oil change every 40k. Personally I'd avoid that one. But I think that's probably the best example of a car, in your budget, with all the things your worried about though. I doubt you'll find anything else with DSG, DMF and DPF from a VW group manufacturer, for £2k.

I have seen a few threads about DSG's needing the DMF's replaced. It doesn't look uncommon. Not much less than a manual needing done by the looks of things. I think it is more expensive though.
